SUMMARY: AmeriCorps Academic Success Coaches provide essential support to students on their 8-year path as Breakthrough Scholars. Working directly with Scholars, AmeriCorps Academic Success Coaches provide mentoring, academic support, and coaching. Additionally, AmeriCorps Coaches support program planning and implementation, and other activities to contribute to the success of Breakthrough Scholars. AmeriCorps Academic Success Coaches receive training in a variety of areas to prepare for a rewarding and successful placement with Breakthrough.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: All the following duties and responsibilities are essential position functions, though some members may have a greater responsibility for some of the functions listed. The list is not conclusive, and individuals may be asked to perform other position-related duties as requested by their Breakthrough Miami supervisors.
- Act as a role model to Breakthrough Miami Scholars
- Track student progress through grades, test scores, attendance, and other relevant data while maintaining up-to-date student data to inform student support intervention and advising
- Provide direct academic support services to Scholars under the direction of Breakthrough staff at designated Breakthrough Miami sites to ensure Scholars are enrolling and succeeding in appropriately rigorous coursework; and accessing competitive, high-performing middle/high schools and colleges aligned with their interests and aspirations. This will include conducting 1:1 academic and career advising; and delivering group advising sessions and academic support
- Plan and lead advisory class in Breakthrough Miami School Year Saturdays
- Lead academic and career development workshops
- Mentor Scholars on the skills and strategies needed for success in school, including organization, time management, homework completion, and study habits
- Work closely with assigned Breakthrough Miami site director on assigned Scholar roster.
- Aid in the planning and implementation of Breakthrough’s School Year Program (SYP)
- Participate actively in all training, professional development, civic reflection, and service activities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- You must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States.
- You must be 17 years old by September 6, 2025 and have earned or on track to receive a high school diploma/GED.
- You must have a commitment to community service and the ability to serve for the complete program (September 6, 2025 –May 8, 2026).
- You must be able to work on a part-time basis during the School Year Program (SYP) which may include an excess of 20 hours per week (September 6 – May 8; Monday-Friday 3:00pm-8:00pm and twice a month on Saturdays from 8:00am-3:00pm to support Saturday programming.
The Member agrees to submit to a National Criminal History Check inclusive of a fingerprinting-based FBI check (completed by NWFSC HR department), FDLE check, state of residency check if other than Florida and a Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Website Check and be clear of any charges in order to serve in the AmeriCorps program.Enrollment and eligibility of member is subject to successful clearance of the above noted screens. Member will be disqualified from service if the results are analyzed and found to be unacceptable to the service site or to the program. (Disqualifying offenses as well as individuals who have a conviction of murder or are registered sex offenders are NOT eligible to serve with AmeriCorps).
Evaluation
Members receive a mid-service and final evaluation. Performance evaluations are intended to be a mutual exchange of information that informs the program’s service delivery and helps the member successfully complete the term of service.

- Ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds
- Reliable transportation
Member Hours, Benefits, and Compensation:
Reduced-Half-Time members are required to accumulate 675 hours within the service period of September 6, 2025, to May 8, 2026. Members are responsible for tracking and receiving approval of their hours. Members receive the following:
- Living Stipend: $525 semi-monthly while actively serving.
- Education Award- upon completion of 675 service hours, all members are eligible to receive an Education Award from the Corporation for National and Community Service: $2817.14
- Non-monetary benefits (on-going support and professional development from a community of experienced educators and non-profit leaders)
- Student loan forbearance and interest payments, if the member qualifies
