Position Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Lead Operator and under the leadership of the Project Manager, the Water and Wastewater Plant Operator is responsible for the daily operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment and systems within the water and wastewater treatment facilities. This dual role position ensures the reliable performance of plant processes and equipment by performing preventive and corrective maintenance tasks while adhering to regulatory, safety, and operational standards. This role ensures that the facility runs efficiently and delivers high-quality service to the community or client served.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitor, operate, and adjust equipment and processes in the treatment plant including pumps, motors, blowers, valves, and chemical feeders.
- Collect samples and perform routine laboratory tests to ensure proper process functioning and regulatory compliance.
- Record and interpret data from meters, gauges, and SCADA systems; maintain accurate operational logs and reports.
- Perform basic mechanical and electrical maintenance on plant equipment.
- Inspect and clean clarifiers, screens, tanks, filters, and other facility components.
- Respond to alarms and emergencies, including pump failures or process upsets.
- Adhere to safety standards and protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist in troubleshooting operational issues and recommend improvements.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of plant grounds and buildings.
- Participate in on-call rotation or emergency response duties as assigned.
- Regular and timely attendance.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical training or vocational certification in mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in water or wastewater facility maintenance and operations preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid FL Driver's License with a good driving record.
- Possession of a FL Water / Wastewater Operator License (Class C/B/A, depending on plant size and classification).
- Maintenance certification (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) is a plus but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of water / wastewater treatment processes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, schematics, and operational manuals.
- Proficiency with computers, control systems (e.g., SCADA), and laboratory testing procedures.
- Proficient in basic computer use including Microsoft Office and maintenance software.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to regulatory compliance.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
- Must be able to see, hear, touch, feel, stand, walk, bend, lift up to 50 lbs., and climb ladders or stairs.
- May be exposed to noise, odors, gases, and wastewater materials.
- Use of appropriate PPE required at all times.

Work Schedule
- Regular hours may include day, evening, night, weekend, or holiday shifts.
- Participation in a rotating on-call schedule may be required.
Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon successfully passing an employee reference check, criminal background check, drug screening, and a motor vehicle history check. This is a non-exempt position under FSLA regulations
