Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. One year of experience in journalism, advertising, marketing or public relations is required. Additional experience in journalism, advertising, marketing or public relations may substitute for the required college education on a year for year basis

Recruitment Notes

The Public Information Officer (PIO) will report to the Communications Manager and will serve as the liaison between the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces (PROS) Department and members of the local, national, and international media. In coordination with the Office of the Mayor, the PIO is responsible for the release of accurate and timely information regarding PROS' news to the news media and the public. The function of the PIO is an integral component of the day-to-day operations of PROS'. The PIO is charged with ensuring that the avenues of communication are consistently open among the Department, the media, and the community, and that positive relationships are established/maintained between the PROS Department and these entities. In close coordination with the Mayor's Office and other PROS personnel, the PIO will ensure the media receives current information and accurate facts for publication and broadcast on recurring and special events, as well as routine and “hot topic” news emanating from PROS. The PIO will create strongly written copy for press releases, website content, social media postings, marketing campaigns and other types of promotional collateral, such as newsletters and other types of publications; promoting a positive image of the Department through its relationship with media outlets and the public. Work will also include gathering, writing and editing material to be used in speeches and as part of the Department's non-paid media efforts released to newspapers, radio broadcasters, and periodicals. The PIO will also create and edit content in partnership with the Communications and Customer Experience Department (CCED) for paid media opportunities associated with all marketing promotions. The incumbent will be required to work on content for marketing campaigns both internally and externally, and will be tasked with covering Miami-Dade County PROS events at park sites, inclusive at times of evenings and weekends. Additional duties include award nomination preparation and preparing other written material that promotes the image of PROS. Miami-Dade County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) coverage duties are also required of this position, including pre- and post-extreme weather and/or other countywide emergency events.
