Industrial Painter (Helper – 1st Class)

Job Summary

Genesis is seeking Industrial Painters ranging from Helpers to 1st Class to perform surface preparation and protective coating applications on marine vessels, shipyard structures, industrial facilities, and related equipment. Candidates will work safely in accordance with OSHA regulations, client requirements, and company safety policies while maintaining quality workmanship in a demanding industrial environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with or perform surface preparation, including sanding, grinding, scraping, needle gunning, and power tool cleaning.
• Prepare surfaces by removing rust, mill scale, dirt, grease, old coatings, and other contaminants.
• Mix, thin, and apply industrial coatings, primers, sealers, and finishes according to manufacturer specifications.
• Apply coatings using brushes, rollers, conventional spray equipment, and airless spray systems.
• Perform masking, taping, and covering of surfaces prior to painting.
• Inspect completed work to ensure proper coating thickness, coverage, and quality standards.
• Operate and maintain painting equipment and ensure tools are cleaned after use.
• Safely work in confined spaces, elevated work areas, and around other trades as required.
• Follow all PPE requirements, including respirators, protective clothing, and fall protection when applicable.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Follow supervisor instructions and work efficiently as part of a team.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Experience by Classification

Painter Helper

• Assists experienced painters with surface preparation and equipment setup.
• Learns proper painting techniques, safety procedures, and coating applications.
• No previous industrial painting experience required; construction or labor experience preferred.

Painter

• Performs surface preparation and applies industrial coatings with limited supervision.
• Demonstrates knowledge of industrial painting equipment and techniques.
• Reads and follows work instructions and safety procedures.

Journeyman / 1st Class Painter

• Independently performs all phases of industrial painting.
• Operates airless spray equipment and applies specialty coatings.
• Interprets coating specifications and manufacturer requirements.
• Produces high-quality work while maintaining production schedules.
• May mentor helpers and less experienced painters.

Minimum Qualifications

• Previous industrial, marine, shipyard, or commercial painting experience preferred (experience requirements vary by classification).
• Ability to use hand and power tools safely.
• Ability to wear required PPE, including a 3M respirator.
• Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and work in confined spaces.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding work.
• Reliable transportation and ability to report to work as scheduled.
• Must successfully complete all required drug screening, background screening, and client-specific onboarding requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in marine or shipyard painting.
• Knowledge of industrial coatings and corrosion control.
• Experience operating airless spray equipment.
• Current TWIC card (if required for assigned worksite).
• Confined Space, Respiratory Protection, or OSHA certifications are a plus.

Site Access & Screening Requirements

• Background Screening: A clear background is required for permanent site badge eligibility. No violent crimes for week-to-week access.
• Site Access Identification: Employees must possess a valid TWIC Card or STAR ID to access the worksite.
• Required Screenings: 10-Panel Drug Screen and Breath Alcohol Test (BAT).
