POLICE ASSISTANT
Salary Range: $20.84 to $32.41/hour; non-benefitted position, DOE
DEFINITION
The Police Assistant is a civilian, non-sworn, uniformed position that is responsible for a variety of customer service-based interactions with the community. Duties include non-hazardous enforcement of municipal parking laws and regulations as well as clerical front counter tasks related to phone and walk-in contacts at the police department.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Lieutenant and Traffic Sergeant. Projects are assigned, and the person usually works with very little supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/DUTIES
- Handle confidential administrative duties at the front desk. Greets telephone callers and visitors to department; screens and handles inquiries of a general or specific nature; takes messages.
- Takes information from the public regarding thefts, accidents, lost and found property, and other incidents that do not require the presence of a sworn law enforcement officer at the scene; completes standard police reports for review by staff supervisors or sworn supervisory staff.
- Perform a variety of research & staff work; prepare reports.
- Maintain records using computers and various filing systems.
- Coordinate Parking Permits for business employees.
- Enforces parking ordinances and the Town’s Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program, issues parking citations; follows-up on complaints regarding abandoned or illegally parked vehicles; issues citations and arranges for the towing or other abatement measures. Receive and respond to complaints and reports of routine parking incidents from the public.
- Respond to public complaint of abandoned vehicles; document and schedule tows for abandoned vehicles; and ensures proper disposition of illegally parked vehicles; patrols city streets and issues citations on vehicles parked in an unlawful manner. Mark vehicles to detect abuse of timed areas.
- Operate computer equipment and two-way radio as related to employment.
- Directs traffic at crash, crime, and/or congestion scenes.
- Investigates and prepares reports on burglary, petty theft, lost and found property, missing persons, property damage, accidents, Town Ordinance violations, abandoned vehicles and other incidents.
- Assists with maintaining evidence and property in the Evidence Room. Coordinates receiving and cataloging evidence and found property, maintaining records of property movement, processing, and disposition.
- Assist with transporting, storing, photographing, releasing, or destroying property pursuant to state law and established procedures.
- As required testifies in court.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Perform duties within OSHA standards.
- Must be flexible with hours and available to work some evenings and occasional weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge:
Microsoft Office: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Ability to:
Effectively communicate verbally and through written correspondence; understand and follow verbal and written instructions, prepare clear and accurate reports, work cooperatively with others contacted in the course of work, handle multiple work requests under pressure, read and interpret maps, type at a speed of no less than 40WPM and have excellent customer service skills. Operation of radio communication equipment is required. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds and stand outdoors for extended periods while performing traffic control assignments. Required to wear safety equipment, including a vest, belt, and uniform.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Experience:
One (1) year of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience involving substantial public contact, or the exchange of detailed verbal information, including interpreting/clarifying rules, regulations, policies, or procedures and handling complaints as a primary element of the work performed. Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
Education:
High school graduation or equivalent.
Licenses:
California Driver's License, C.L.E.T.S. certification upon hire.
