POSITION CONCEPT
The Apprentice I, II, & Journeyman is a multi-level classification progression responsible for performing all phases of repair, service and/or fabrication on Tampa Electric Company’s fleet and equipment. The complexity of tasks performed varies based on prescribed classification level (see IBEW Intent Book for representative duties by classification). The scope of this position shall include those responsibilities defined in Exhibit “A” of the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the IBEW Intent Book where the position is at a lesser rate of pay.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Perform troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairs to Tampa Electric Company’s light vehicles, heavy-duty truck, and heavy-equipment fleet which includes gasoline engines, diesel engines, drive train, brakes, suspension & steering, electrical/electronic systems.
2. Perform automotive and heavy equipment troubleshooting and repairs in engine repair, automatic transmission & transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension & steering, brakes, electrical/ electronic systems, heating & air conditioning and engine performance.
3. Perform vehicle and non-vehicle welding and/or fabrication.
4. Perform all phases of troubleshooting and repairs to mobile hydraulic equipment and/or systems (aerial lifts, digger derricks, and cranes, etc.).
5. Perform all phases of troubleshooting and repairs to construction equipment (bull dozers, front-end loaders, etc.).
6. Perform preventative maintenance routines on vehicular and non-vehicular equipment.
7. Complete all work in line with job-related Safe Work Practices, work rules, and regulatory/environmental requirements.

RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: Energy Delivery key customer contacts, including all operating personnel.
External: May interact with equipment manufacturers and/or suppliers, and other vendors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Training
Required:
High School diploma or equivalent. Class C driver’s license. Must have passed written portion of the CDL prior to starting.
Related Experience
Required: For Apprentice position, no previous experience required.
Preferred: For Journeyman position, extensive utility equipment repair experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Required: Mechanical aptitude, ability to learn, critical thinking and problem solving.
Preferred: Working knowledge of vehicle systems (brakes, steering, AC, Electrical, Drivetrain), hydraulic system knowledge, experience welding. Class A driver’s license

WORK CONDITIONS
This position will require irregular work schedules inclusive of night-shift assignments; temporary assignments to various Fleet locations; overtime; the ability to respond to call outs/road calls (Garage Mechanic III only); occasional work on weekends; the use of personal tools; and the use of a personal vehicle for business related transportation. Working environment is typical of heavy truck and equipment repair facility including but not limited to occasional outdoor lighting challenges (work outside in darkness with flashlight), tight working conditions, constant vehicle’s moving in and out of facility and service/repairs calls outside the garage facility either roadside or work site. Working hours are day or night as required; Mechanic availability is 24 hours a day.
