Wipers
The Wiper performs cleaning, sanitation, and basic maintenance tasks aboard the vessel in engine spaces. This skilled role supports engine spaces and waste management areas, including garbage handling, incinerator and pulper rooms, and related systems. The Wiper must follow ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and all safety policies, and be prepared to work flexible shifts and respond to on-call requirements as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform cleaning, washing, painting, and basic maintenance in engine spaces, waste handling areas, and related facilities as directed.
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of garbage areas, cold storage rooms, and cooking oil/tank rooms; ensure proper pest control where applicable.
Monitor and maintain garbage handling equipment (including shredders, conveyors, compactors, incinerators, pulpers, drains, pumps, and pipes); report faults promptly to supervision.
Operate and assist with incinerator plant operations and related equipment (ash vacuum transport, pulper systems, etc.); keep incinerator and pulper rooms clean and maintained.
Ensure proper garbage segregation and disposal according to policy, including sorting glass, metal tins, aluminum cans, and other waste; sanitize crushed glass and store in designated areas.
Enforce proper segregation at the source and maintain the color-coded bag system (Yellow, Red, Gray, Green/Blue) as per company policy.
Maintain all safety and environmental equipment, including sensors and firefighting gear; ensure area is clean and compliant with PPE requirements.
Change water in pulper systems as required; log maintenance and cleaning activities.
Provide records to the appropriate officer regarding incinerated or port-disposed waste; assist Environmental Officer with garbage off-loading in port.
Operate electric forklifts and assist with material handling as needed.
Coordinate with the Environmental Officer when large materials or off-loading are required; ensure areas are prepped to prevent waste during maintenance or cleaning.
Perform related duties as required; participate in shipboard drills and safety training as directed.
Qualifications & Training:
Previous experience onboard vessels within a similar position
Practical knowledge of incinerator equipment operation
Must hold a completed firefighting training, lifesaving training, life-boatman certification, certificate and completed personal responsibilities under emergency circumstances training for passenger ships in accordance with STCW 95 for seafarers.
Engine Watch Certificate desirable
Language Requirements:
Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew.
Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures; effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors, and co-workers.
Additional languages are advantageous but not required.
Physical & Environmental Requirements:
Physical: Regularly stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Fine motor skills required for detailed cleaning and maintenance tasks.
Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus as needed.
Environmental: Must be able to work in shipboard environments with exposure to heat, cold, humidity, noise, and confined spaces; wear appropriate PPE; participate in emergency procedures and drills; and be flexible to work alternate shifts and respond to off-hours requests as required. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is required to perform duties effectively.
