Oiler

The Oiler is a skilled marine mechanic who supports engine room operations by performing preventive and corrective maintenance on propulsion and auxiliary systems, assisting with lubrication, fuel, water, and hydraulic components, and keeping engine spaces clean and safe. Under the supervision of the Staff Chief Engineer, the Oiler works across areas of the Engine Department and participates in watch duties as required, while adhering to ISM/ISO and SQM standards, USPH guidelines, and all safety and environmental policies. This role may involve cross-training in multiple engine room tasks and shift work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on engine room equipment, including lubrication systems, pumps, valves, and auxiliary machinery; assist with routine inspections and servicing.

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical components; assist with cleaning, painting, and housekeeping of engine spaces.

  • Maintain tools and workshop in a safe, clean, and organized condition; report hazards or equipment malfunctions to supervision.

  • Support senior engineers with daily tasks and project work; follow work orders issued by the Staff Chief Engineer.

  • Participate in engine room watch as assigned; monitor equipment performance and report anomalies promptly.

  • Ensure compliance with ISM/ISO, SQM, USPH, and environmental and safety policies; participate in drills and safety trainings.

  • Document maintenance actions and parts used; coordinate with other departments as needed to minimize downtime.

Qualifications & Training

  • Minimum: STCW certification current; completed general fire fighting training.

  • Experience: Prior onboard vessel experience as an oiler or in a similar role; familiarity with engine room operations preferred.

  • Technical knowledge: Basic understanding of lubrication, fuel, water, and hydraulic systems; ability to read and follow blueprints and manuals.

  • Certifications/Training: Safety training as required by company policy; ongoing safety and environmental training.

Language Requirements

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew.

  • Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures; effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and co-workers.

  • Additional languages are advantageous but not required.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Physical: Regularly stand, walk, and perform manual tasks; lift up to 50 pounds; work in confined engine spaces and tolerate physical exertion.

  • Vision: Close and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus as needed.

  • Environmental: Work in shipboard environments with heat, noise, and variable conditions; wear appropriate PPE; participate in emergency procedures and drills; potential for shift work and on-call requirements.
