SUMMARY:

The HCW shall provide support services by obtaining vital signs and performing portions of physical examinations, administering medications via various routes, and documenting medical examinations and treatments. The role also includes preparing patients for diagnostics, assisting providers with procedures, and maintaining patient records. Additionally, effective communication, infection prevention, and the use of computerized systems for patient appointments and encounters are essential. QUALIFICATIONS: Mandatory knowledge and skills:

  • Obtains vital signs as indicated, to include but not limited to blood pressure (manual and automatic), pulse, respirations, temperature, and pulse oximetry.
  • Perform appropriate portions of physical examinations including appropriate physical measurements to include but not limited to head circumference, visual acuity, fetal doppler tones, electrocardiograms (ECG).
  • Prepare and administer various medications via prescribed route to include but not limited to intramuscular, inhalation, topical and oral routes, as specified by clinic operation policies and procedure.
  • Observe and report adverse reactions to medication and/or treatment.
  • Prepare and position patients for diagnostics testing, examinations, treatments and clinical procedures.
  • Set-up and turn-over patient examination/procedure rooms, to include cleaning the examination/procedure room between patient encounters as specified by clinic operation policies and procedures.
  • Assists providers with examinations and procedures.
  • Assembles the type and quantity of material and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies.
  • Monitor and record age appropriate psychological measurements.
  • Document medical examinations, treatment, diagnostics, clinical procedures and observed effects.
  • Identify patient problems and accurately notify patient care team of observations. Recognize and respond to emergencies and perform basic life support measures. Maintain patient medical records in electronic format as well as hard copy.
  • Reinforces patient teaching done by registered nurses regarding their individual health concerns.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate/educate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients and staff.
  • Establishes and maintains good interpersonal professional relationships with co-workers, families, peers, and other health care team members.
  • Attends and participates in meetings during normal duty hours and professional staff development and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to, quality improvement meetings, in-service education programs, and workshops.
  • Interest Log case staffing, and others required by applicable regulations, MTF guidance, or as directed by supervisor.
  • Knowledge of standard nursing care principles, procedures, and practices.
  • Basic knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their expected beneficial effects, and potential side effects.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform infection prevention procedures, procedures including use of personal protective equipment, disposal of waste, and aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform basic computing, clerical tasks and administrative functions to facilitate patient care/treatment.
  • Greet, screen and process patients for appointments utilizing computerized appointment systems including but not limited to MHS GENESIS, and Essentris.
  • Utilize computer systems/database to facilitate patient encounters, to include ordering laboratory and radiological studies. The computer systems include but are not limited to ASIMS and MiCare.
  • Verify patients are registered in MHS GENESIS and DEERS; updates demographic information as needed. Obtain current, accurate contact information (i.e., cell/home phone number).
  • Screen incoming calls and route to staff members appropriately.
  • Schedule patient appointments using correct MHS GENESIS booking procedures, Access to Care standards and established clinic capability/booking protocols. Perform and/or assist with changing, canceling or adding notes for MiCare, telephone consults/appointments as needed by providing basic customer service.
  • Complete necessary MHS GENESIS Essentris, ASIMS and MiCare training used to facilitate patient appointments, medical care/treatment, correspondence/communication. Training will be provided to HCW by the 48th Medical Group.
  • Complete medical group and unit specific orientation and competency verification in accordance with medical group guidelines.
  • When required and provided by the Government, wear special protective clothing and shoe covers. When duties will be performed in specified areas, eye protection will be worn to ensure infection prevention standards are met.
EXPERIENCE:

The HCW shall have knowledge of professional care theories, principles, practices, and procedures to perform medical documentation of moderate difficulty and experience in assessing histories of pediatric, adolescent, adults, obstetrics, gynecological and geriatric patients, as appropriate.

The HCW shall have knowledge of a wide range of medical disorders/conditions and disease processes across the lifespan, as appropriate.

The HCW shall have knowledge of preventive health schedules, procedures, processes and education methods.

The HCW shall have knowledge of disease management and population health principles.

The HCW shall have knowledge of a variety of medical standards used in patient treatment.

The HCW shall have knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions. This includes disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and recommended follow up care.

The HCW shall have knowledge of computer operations and proficiency in use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The role requires standing, walking, and moving patients, which can involve physical exertion. LPNs shall also handle and operate medical equipment and perform procedures that require manual dexterity. The work is usually performed indoors in a well-lit and clean environment. However, there might be exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials, so proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential.
