Operator/Driver
Role and Responsibilities:
- Operate one of several different transit vans or company non-revenue vehicles in a safe, courteous, and reliable manner throughout the contracted service area within a daily assigned time schedule.
- Stop at designated points to load and/or unload passengers.
- May assist in the boarding of passengers using wheelchairs or other mobility aids and is required to properly secure wheelchairs and scooters.
- Notify dispatch of deviations, overloads, accidents, or passenger incidents.
- Notify dispatch of all passengers’ medical or behavioral problems and bus mechanical or electrical trouble using clear and precise language to communicate.
- Advise passengers of rules and regulations when necessary.
- Complete and submits written reports concerning passengers and all accidents.
- Operate onboard computer fare boxes.
- Assume all other duties assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, such as GED, required.
- 3-year clean Motor Vehicle Report
- Transit Operators will be required to have a smart phone for trip scheduling purposes
Mobility Requirements:
- The operator sits approximately 85% of the workday while operating a vehicle and needs the ability to get in and out of the standard driver’s seat and area with relative ease.
- The operator stands to move about the garage, drivers’ areas, driver switch out, during pre-trip inspections, or at layover as frequently as each half hour, up to fifteen minutes, approximately 15% of the workday.
- Assist passengers using wheelchairs by securing the chair and by operating the wheelchair lift. Stoops, bends, or kneels to secure wheelchairs in the bus, a maximum of 10% of the workday-depending on the number of wheelchairs. Physically able to reach and work the controls with hands and feet with modification.
- Upon request Operator may lift packages or strollers weighing up to fifteen pounds and lifts seating units weighing up to 15 pounds to accommodate riders using wheelchairs. Manually deploying the wheelchair ramp when it is defective requires up to 30 pounds of lift force.
- Called upon occasionally to push, pull, slide, or partially lift passengers with wheelchairs, other mobility aids, or strollers for passengers up to six times per day. Should have sufficient strength to push doors or windows, to open or secure emergency hatches, and to reach over their heads to open the overhead hatches if air conditioning unit’s malfunction.
Additional Notes:
- Must submit to drug test and background check.
- Also, be able to work flexible hours and to sit for extended periods.
