Sanitation Engineer
The Sanitation Engineer is responsible for maintaining the potable water system and related aqua facilities, including pools and spas, to ensure safe, compliant, and reliable operation. This role oversees water chemistry, filtration, dosing, and monitoring of equipment, and contributes to preventative and corrective maintenance within the Engine/Water systems. The incumbent works under supervision and may assist with other related duties as needed, while adhering to safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Maintain and monitor potable water systems, including bunkering, storage, distribution, and spa facilities; ensure water quality meets USPH and internal standards.
Balance and adjust water chemistry, monitor chemical levels, and manage dosing using appropriate equipment; log readings and actions.
Inspect, service, and operate water treatment equipment (pumps, filters, chlorination systems, monitoring devices) and perform necessary maintenance or repairs.
Conduct super chlorination and other disinfection activities as required; ensure backup monitors and spare parts are available and functional.
Maintain accurate records of water treatment activities, system performance, and maintenance actions; prepare reports as required.
Coordinate with other shipboard departments to minimize downtime and ensure water systems’ readiness for operations.
Provide training and guidance to junior personnel in sanitation duties and water treatment procedures.
Monitor and control chemical inventories; order supplies and maintain safe storage practices.
Identify cost containment opportunities related to chemicals, supplies, and maintenance practices; implement efficiency improvements where appropriate.
Participate in safety drills and trainings; comply with ISM/ISO, SQM, USPH, environmental and safety policies.
Qualifications & Training
STCW95 and social responsibility training completed.
General knowledge of onboard vessel systems; ability to calibrate monitors and safely start/stop water systems.
Ability to coordinate projects, set priorities, resolve issues, and work without supervision.
Proficiency with computers and basic software packages (e.g., Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Language Requirements
Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew.
Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret written procedures; effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors, and co-workers.
Additional languages are advantageous but not required.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
Physical: Regularly stand, walk, and perform manual tasks; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds as needed; ability to perform tasks requiring dexterity and fine motor skills.
Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Environmental: Work in shipboard environments with exposure to heat, cold, humidity, noise, and confined spaces; wear appropriate PPE; participate in emergency procedures and drills; may require shift work and on-call availability. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is required to perform duties effectively.
