Position Summary
The 1st Electrical Engineer is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, operation, and management of the ship’s electrical systems. Acting as the deputy and second-in-charge of the Electrical Division, the 1st Electrical Engineer must be prepared to assume full charge of the division in the absence of the Chief Electrical Engineer. The role involves supervising equipment maintenance, coordinating repairs, managing operational tasks, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean Group's The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies.
- Employees may be required to perform functions across various service venues and throughout the ship.
- In line with Royal Caribbean’s Anchored in Excellencephilosophy, all employees conduct themselves professionally and courteously at all times, engaging positively with guests and fellow crew members in both guest contact and crew areas.
Leadership & Supervision:
- Serve as the acting deputy and second-in-charge of the Electrical Division, ready to assume full responsibility when needed.
- Assist the Chief Electrical Engineer in supervising the division’s operations, maintenance, and repairs.
- Lead and coordinate daily work activities for Assistant Electrical Engineers and other electrical team members.
- Support and mentor junior engineers and technicians, providing guidance and troubleshooting assistance as required.
- Request additional manpower from the Chief Electrical Engineer for repair and maintenance tasks.
- Keep the Chief Electrical Engineer informed daily about the status of all systems and areas of responsibility.
- Maintain detailed daily reports and records, updating the division’s logbook regularly for reference.
- Assist the Chief Electrical Engineer and Technical Storekeeper with budget proposals and resource planning.
- Be present and actively involved during ship maneuvering in the Engine Control Room (ECR).
- Participate in meetings, training, and safety activities as required.
- Perform any other related duties as assigned, supporting the overall electrical operations onboard.
Qualifications:
Minimum Hiring, Language, and Physical Requirements:
- Valid licenses/certificates for electrical or power engineering.
- Extensive experience (preferably 5+ years) working with large electrical plants onboard ships or offshore installations.
- Proven experience with shipboard electrical systems, including propulsion, switchboards, generators, high voltage motors, and automation systems.
- Basic Safety Training (STCW-95) and Advanced Fire Fighting Training.
- Computer literacy, including MS Office applications (Word, Excel).
- Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or equivalent, and experience with systems such as AMOS, Autronica Fire Alarm, ABB Cycloconverter, Cegelec Diesel Electric Propulsion, Valmarine XDi Damatic, Sperry/Decca navigation, and various elevator systems.
Internal Candidate Requirements:
- Completion of at least one full contract with a satisfactory or higher performance rating.
Language Requirements:
- Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests.
- Ability to read and write English for understanding procedures, instructions, and communication.
- Proficiency in additional languages such as Spanish, French, or German is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, handle equipment, reach, talk, hear, and smell.
- Frequently or continually lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, with the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be physically capable of participating in emergency life-saving procedures and drills, including handling lifeboats, with full use of arms, legs, and sensory functions.
