Outside Machinist – Travel Role

📍 Location: Newport News, Virginia

💰 Pay: $21.73 – $27.31 per hour (based on experience)

🛠 Per Diem: $140 per day worked

We are hiring Outside Machinists with at least 4 years of commercial or naval experience as a First-Class Machinist. This is a travel position located in Newport News, VA, supporting shipbuilding and maintenance projects.

• Install hull inserts, main engines, propulsion plant machinery, and related equipment.
• Overhaul valves (steam and WOG), perform AC & refrigeration repairs.
• Operate lathes and perform optical alignment and hydrostatic testing.
• Install components such as aircraft elevators, anchor windlass, masts, antennas, and arresting gear.
• Use precision instruments for lapping, blue checking, and fitting liners.
• Perform lube oil flushing, flange makeup, and ballast tank installation.
• Conduct testing on main engines and boiler operations.
• Handle shafting and bearing work, including sea valve and turbine installation.
• Operate heavy machinery such as cargo cranes and portable milling/drill machines.
• Install and test steam valves, diesel systems, and weapons elevators.

• Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
• Familiarity with OSHA regulations for shipbuilding.
• Skilled in precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, rulers).
• Experience with valve overhaul, AC & refrigeration repair, and propulsion machinery installation.
• Knowledge of steam plant cleanliness and system cleanliness grades.

• Minimum 4 years of experience as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic, engine man, or heavy equipment repairman.
• Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
• Physically able to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, climb, and lift up to 40 lbs.
• Must pass a respirator fit test and physical exam.
• Willing to work indoors/outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.73 - $27.31/hr.
