Job Title: Diesel Technician/Mechanic
Shift: Monday-Friday 1230pm to 930pm. Two Mechanics needed - entry level diesel mechanic and senior mechanic!
Job Description
This role focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of diesel fleet vehicles, including trucks, trailers, and box trucks equipped with Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and Volvo powertrains. You will perform comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and HVAC work, from routine preventative maintenance to advanced diagnostics and complex engine repairs, ensuring vehicles are safe, reliable, and compliant with DOT standards.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel trucks, trailers, and other fleet vehicles, including Freightliner M2 box trucks and tractors.
- Test drive vehicles and evaluate components and systems using diagnostic equipment such as infrared engine tools, multi-meters, and diagnostic computers.
- Follow detailed checklists to inspect critical components, including belts, hoses, steering systems, brakes, and other safety-related parts.
- Communicate with drivers to obtain clear descriptions of vehicle issues and verify problems through thorough inspections and diagnostic testing.
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, brake work, and tire service.
- Conduct troubleshooting and preventative maintenance, including brake repair, tire service, and DOT inspections.
- Tear down, repair, and rebuild faulty assemblies such as power systems, steering systems, linkages, and other mechanical components.
- Perform engine repairs and after-treatment work on Cummins, Detroit Diesel, and other diesel engines.
- Carry out electrical diagnostics and advanced repair work, including mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
- Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels, and troubleshoot electronics and electrical wiring throughout the vehicle.
- Repair radiator leaks and cooling system issues to maintain proper engine operating temperatures.
- Install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
- Repair manual and automatic transmissions and related drivetrain components.
- Repair or replace shock absorbers and suspension components as needed.
- Replace and adjust headlights and other lighting to ensure proper visibility and compliance.
- Perform AC and heating system diagnostics and repairs, including HVAC testing.
- Independently complete DOT inspections and ensure vehicles meet all regulatory and safety requirements.
- Use diagnostic software and scan tools to identify and resolve complex engine and electrical issues.
- Mentor junior technicians by sharing knowledge, guiding repairs, and supporting skill development.
- Maintain and use personal tools effectively and keep work areas organized and safe.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 3+ years of experience working as a diesel truck mechanic or technician on various diesel fleet vehicles, with a preference for approximately 5 years of experience.
- Strong understanding of diesel engines and preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, brake work, and tire service.
- Hands-on experience working on Cummins engines, Detroit Diesel engines, and Volvo powertrains.
- Proven ability to diagnose and repair issues on Freightliner M2 box trucks, tractors, and trailers.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and HVAC systems.
- Experience performing troubleshooting and preventative maintenance, including brake repair, tire service, and DOT inspections.
- Ability to independently complete DOT inspections in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Experience with electrical diagnostics and advanced repair work, including rewiring ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
- Ability to perform engine repairs, after-treatment work, and mechanical troubleshooting on diesel engines.
- Proficiency using a multi-meter and other diagnostic tools to test alternators, electrical circuits, and engine components.
- Capability to test engines using diagnostic computers and related software tools.
- Experience with AC and heating system diagnostics and repairs, including HVAC testing.
- Ability to mentor and support junior technicians in developing technical skills.
- Must supply and effectively use personal tools appropriate for diesel maintenance and repair work.
- Preferred possession of a CDL B license to support work with commercial vehicles.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Preferred ASE certifications in relevant diesel or automotive specialties.
- Preferred OEM certifications for specific manufacturers or engine platforms.
- Experience using diagnostic software and scan tools for advanced engine and electrical troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with Detroit and Cummins engine platforms and their after-treatment systems.
- Experience performing DOT inspections and documenting findings accurately.
- DOP certification preferred.
- Comfort working on a variety of diesel fleet vehicles, including Freightliners, tractors, trailers, and box trucks.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a small, collaborative team.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with drivers and team members.
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.

Work Environment
This position is based in a diesel shop that is not climate controlled, meaning it can be hot in warm weather and cold in cooler seasons. The facility operates with a small team of approximately five people, fostering close collaboration and communication. The work schedule runs Monday through Friday from 12:30 PM to 9:30 PM, providing a consistent afternoon and evening shift. The environment involves hands-on work with diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment, using diagnostic computers, multi-meters, and other tools. Uniforms are provided for employees, ensuring appropriate attire for the shop setting.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Orlando, FL.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $24.00 - $30.00/hr.
