Minimum qualifications: A high school diploma and seven years professional experience in a closely related biological field or laboratory program is required. A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field can substitute for four of the seven years of required experience. Prefer a bachelor’s degree in a life or physical science.

Description of Duties:

This position is responsible for assessing aquatic plant populations, recommending and permitting aquatic plant control programs for both the private and public sectors, providing educational and informational services, monitoring aquatic plant control operations, providing extension services upon request, and conducting investigations for violations of the aquatic plant permitting rules.

The incumbent will direct, on a region-wide basis, permitting and enforcement activities under the rules of Chapters 68F-20, 68F-54 and 68A-23.088, F.A.C. Provides guidance to regional staff for issuing new permits and formulating permit modifications. Ensures that permits are being issued consistently and within the required time frame. Supervises enforcement activities within a region and coordinates with the appropriate agencies. Supervises personnel activities and performs review and performance planning of regional staff. Coordinates work schedules to effectively use equipment and staff time.

The incumbent for this position will assist in organizing, coordinating and directing the activities of the field operations subsection within their region.

The incumbent will assist in filling staff vacancies including developing criteria for advertising open positions, interviewing and making hire recommendations. They will identify staff deficiencies and provide staff direction and training as needed.

The incumbent’s supervisory responsibilities include direct supervision of up to 4 FTE positions and 2 OPS positions within their region.

The incumbent is also responsible for other miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor.

It is expected that all FWC employees courteously assist Commission constituents to resolve questions or problems they may have on matters relating to the Commission, its programs or fish and wildlife conservation in general; and garner public support for agency objectives and programs by serving Florida's citizens in a positive and proactive manner.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required for the position:

Incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work well with team members and members of the public.

Other required knowledge, skills and abilities include:

  • Highly organized with excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to supervise others/staff effectively.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced work climate, and to adhere to regulatory time constraints;
  • Knowledge of invasive plant management principles and practices;
  • Ability to understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to plant management.
  • Familiarity with nonnative species issues;
  • Demonstrated technical writing ability;
  • Public speaking;
  • Experience working with the public and/or stakeholder representatives.
  • The ability to travel for several days at a time throughout Florida.
