Tenure Track Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in Environmental Health Sciences

The Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work at Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for two full-time, tenure-earning/tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) under two main concentrations:

  1. Assistant Professor (Tenure Track)– Environmental Health Sciences (EHS)
  2. Assistant/Associate Professor (Tenure Track or Tenured)– Brain, Behavior, and the Environment (BBE)

Areas of Expertise

We seek energetic, visionary scholars whose research advances understanding of how environmental exposures shape human health. Desired areas of expertise include environmental health sciences, carcinogenesis, environmental toxicology, precision environmental health, and neurotoxicology (Assistant Professor, EHS), as well as environmental neuroscience or neurotoxicology examining the impacts of pollutants on brain health, behavior, and neurological outcomes (Assistant/Associate Professor, BBE).

Research Focus and Funding Expectations

Successful candidates must demonstrate current extramural funding and scholarly productivity for the Associate Professor position in the neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disease area and strong potential to obtain funding as PI for the Assistant Professor position in EHS and BBE concentrations.

Departmental Strengths & Collaborative Opportunities

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences conducts innovative research aimed at reducing the health impacts of environmental hazards through science, education, and community service. Faculty expertise spans:

  • Exposure sciences and exposomics
  • Integration of multi-omics and exposomics
  • Toxicology and stem cell biology
  • Occupational and Environmental epidemiology
  • Neuroinflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction
  • Oxidative stress and gene–environment interactions
  • Cancer, mental health, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders

The department also leads a newly awarded NIEHS Training Grant in Environmental Neuroscience , in collaboration with the departments of Psychology at FIU. Multiage human cohorts with available data, environmental and biological samples are followed by the EHS Department including the 9/11 World Trade Center responders living in Florida. These cohorts target research on neurocognitive impacts, cancer, mental health, and respiratory disease.

Candidate Expectations

Successful applicants are expected to contribute to the research, teaching, and service missions that support the continued growth of the department, college, and university. Responsibilities may include:

  • Build upon existing departmental strengths in environmental health sciences and environmental neuroscience
  • Maintaining an active, externally funded research program
  • Contributing to graduate education through teaching and mentoring
  • Engaging in interdisciplinary research across the College and University
  • Advancing the mission to expand knowledge of how environmental pollutants impact chronic disease and population health

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to environmental or occupational health. Competitive applicants should have a track record of peer-reviewed publications, and effective teaching in the relevant discipline. Applicants for Associate Professor should hold extramural collaborative funded research as Principal Investigator, and applicants for Assistant Professor should demonstrate strong potential to obtain funding as PI.
