Attorney ( {{city}})
Position Summary:
The Family Law Attorney provides direct legal services to low-income individuals and families dealing with family law matters, including domestic violence, divorce, child custody, child support, and related issues. This role is part of a nonprofit legal services organization committed to expanding access to justice for underserved communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide trauma-informed legal representation to clients in family law matters, including but not limited to divorce, custody, visitation, guardianship, child support, and domestic violence protection orders.
- Represent clients in court proceedings, mediations, and administrative hearings.
- Conduct client intake, interviews, legal research, and case assessments to determine appropriate legal strategies.
- Collaborate with advocates, case managers, and other support staff to provide holistic client services.
- Draft pleadings, motions, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files and data entry in compliance with funder requirements.
- Engage in community outreach and legal education efforts to raise awareness of family law rights and services.
- Stay informed of changes in family law, court procedures, and relevant public benefits.
- Participate in legal team meetings, trainings, and cross-agency partnerships.
- Occasionally supervise legal interns or support pro bono initiatives.
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in [State] (or ability to become licensed shortly after hire).
- Minimum [13+] years of experience in family law or related legal services, preferably with low-income or vulnerable populations.
- Demonstrated knowledge of domestic relations law, protective orders, custody and visitation, and child support issues.
- Experience representing clients in court or willingness to gain courtroom experience quickly.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to explain legal concepts in plain language.
- Commitment to access to justice, racial equity, and trauma-informed legal practice.
- Ability to manage a high-volume caseload and work both independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior work with survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, or clients with disabilities or mental health needs.
- Experience with case management systems like LegalServer or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with nonprofit funding compliance (e.g., LSC, VOCA, IOLTA, or state grants).
