Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIESThe following duties are illustrative for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned. Crime Scene Investigator I
- Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives; maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
- Responds to crime scenes as required to locate, identify, document, record, recover, and process as necessary all items of evidentiary value using the latest accepted scientific and technological methods and equipment, documenting such activity in written reports.
- May fingerprint persons, using ink pads, specialized tools for deceased persons, and electronic recording methods.
- May photograph and transfer residual fingerprints from objects, such as weapons or drinking glasses, to record cards, using standard technique.
- Photographs crime scenes, including fatal auto accidents.
- Works closely with patrol officers, detectives, the State Attorney's office, local and state crime laboratory personnel, and the Medical Examiner’s office.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the latest crime scene techniques and available resources.
- Exercises good judgment, high standards of practice and ethical conduct.
- Maintain a level of professional knowledge and expertise through periodic training, proficiency testing, journals or literature reviews in the Crime Scene profession.

- May operate as a team leader to coordinate with other Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs) working in tandem on crime scenes and with police laboratory casework.

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Crime Scene Investigator I-
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required. A minimum of three (3) years of experience with a law enforcement agency with crime scene-related responsibilities is required. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Forensic Science or related field, preferably crime scene applicable, preferred.
- A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the above minimum qualifications.
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required. A minimum of four (4) years of experience with a law enforcement agency with crime scene related responsibilities required OR; graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree and two (2) years of experience with a law enforcement agency with crime scene related responsibilities required OR; graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year of experience with a law enforcement agency with crime scene related responsibilities required.
- A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Crime Scene Investigator I-
- Possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire.
- 40 hours of Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) Training required.
- Possession of valid driver’s license and maintenance of clean driving record required with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from date of hire.
- A minimum of forty-eight (48) hours of Crime Scene Investigator Training required.
- A minimum of ninety-six (96) total hours of Crime Scene Investigator Training from the International Association of Identification (IAI) required.
