Overview

Perform as an experienced Survey Watch Stander for reef fish surveys and contribute substantively to video annotation, data management, and analytical support in the GCRF Gulf Video Survey program.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Serve as survey watch stander during reef fish surveys on NOAA Ships and small research vessels.
• Perform pre- and post-survey equipment inventory, gear preparation, and supply tracking.
• Conduct data collection, biological and environmental sampling, and process data per prescribed SOPs.
• Unload, clean, and store gear; appropriately store data upon survey completion.
• Annotate GFISHER and PRDW video data; identify marine fishes in all life stages from Gulf of America habitats.
• Execute full annotation workflow including automated processing (VIAME/Google Cloud), review, QA/QC, and Oracle database ingest.
• Update annotation tracking sheets and GitHub project management tools.
• Perform data entry, QA/QC, and validation; support future AI/ML post-processing.
• Assist data analysts with QA/QC, data prep, report drafting, and graph creation.
• Track assigned duties in GitHub project management tool.
• Participate in public outreach and education activities.

Required Qualifications

• MS Degree in Marine Science or related field, OR BS Degree plus 2 years of relevant experience.
• Computer literacy with word processing, database, statistical, and graphics software; college-level report writing.
• Knowledge of Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) field sampling protocols for reef fish.
• Proficiency in fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification; knowledge of reef taxa from the Gulf of America.
• Knowledge of procedures when encountering endangered or threatened species.
• Must meet NOAA OMAO sea-duty medical fitness requirements; current tetanus vaccine required.
