The Real Estate Accountant will be responsible for managing and executing accounting functions for real estate portfolios, including commercial, retail, and residential properties, on behalf of the firm and its clients. The ideal candidate will ensure accurate financial reporting, support property managers and clients, maintain compliance with regulations, and offer experienced support for complex real estate transactions and tax issues.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting packages for assigned property portfolios (commercial, retail, residential)
Maintain supporting schedules, workpapers, and general ledgers; handle month-end closings and review for accuracy
Record journal entries, accruals, and adjustments for real estate transactions
Perform detailed account analysis, reconciliations (bank, credit card, A/R, A/P), and variance explanations
Complete CAM (Common Area Maintenance) reconciliations and budgets
Operational & Client Support
Manage, review, and process Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
Support due diligence for acquisitions/dispositions and leasing activity including lease review/interpretation
Coordinate and assist with tax return preparation, property tax compliance, and commercial sales tax filings
Monitor rent collections, prepare management fee invoices, and track tenant charges
Project & Asset Management
Prepare funding/loan draw requests and related reporting for new developments and capital projects
Update project budgets in Yardi or similar property management accounting platforms; generate job cost and variance reports
Advisory & Process Improvement
Identify potential tax-saving opportunities for clients (depreciation, capital gains, 1031 exchanges, cost segregation studies)
Assist with budget preparation and forecasting, risk assessment, and financial planning for real estate ventures
Participate in process improvements and implement best practices for accounting workflows
Core Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA license preferred)
3+ years’ experience in real estate accounting (commercial property accounting and CAM reconciliation required)
Proficiency with property management/accounting software (Yardi, MRI, or comparable); advanced Excel skills required
Deep understanding of GAAP and familiarity with tax regulations relevant to real estate (depreciation, capital gains, 1031, etc.)
Experience in preparing and analyzing financial statements and reports for real estate entities
Strong organizational and time-management abilities; ability to meet deadlines, multi-task, and work independently or in a team setting
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
Pay extreme attention to detail and accuracy in all deliverables
Preferred Attributes
Prior experience supporting a CPA firm or working with multiple concurrent client portfolios
Knowledge of South Florida commercial and residential real estate markets
