Job Summary:

Operates all necessary equipment, performs all nuclear medicine procedures, produces diagnostic quality nuclear medicine images, and prepares and administers radiopharmaceutical doses. Follow all departmental radiation safety and ALARA policies as well as state and federal regulations for safe use of radioactive materials. Performs all required quality control procedures in accordance with state and departmental guidelines. Coordinates patient flow to maximize the use of the Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT scanners.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Florida State License in Nuclear Medicine - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
  • ARRT (NM) or CNMT certification required
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS - must maintain active and in good standing throughout employment

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Measures radioactive dosage prescription for patient as per policy; records and monitors usage of every radioactive isotope.
  • Applies knowledge of growth & development in customer interactions and treatment. Responsible for service excellence index (SEI) for patients & families and implements strategies to increase SEI.
  • Complies with all standards for safety, risk management, and infection control as required by enforcement agencies.
  • Coordinates scheduling, transporting, and scanning of patients to maximize utilization of PET scanners.
  • Performs appropriate nuclear medicine examinations, explains procedures, promptly enters and transmits patient information into PACS.
  • Assists with ordering supplies, monitors inventory, maintains cleanliness of the equipment, and scan room.
  • Ensures correct examination is ordered. Reviews all information prior to initiating exams.
  • Surveys incoming medication of radioactive isotopes; wipes materials; utilizes radioactive disposal policy to dispose of isotopes properly.
  • Explains examination and procedures to patients and parents. Checks history and previous nuclear medicine scan (if any) with designated Radiologist.
  • Follows hospital patient-identification policy prior to performing examination. Utilizes two patient identifiers to ensure accuracy per policy.
  • Maintains accurate and timely nuclear medicine scan records. Ensures scanning and dosages are accurate.
  • Collaborates with nursing to ensure patients are prepped (i.e.; NPO status) during exam in an effort to minimize any reschedules, and ensures high quality images are done safely.
  • Performs high-quality nuclear medicine scans/examinations scan as per Radiologist's protocol.
  • Enters and transmits patient information to PACS for interpretation/reading promptly upon completion of examination.
  • Adjusts equipment, determines proper technique, and arranges immobilization and support devices to obtain correct patient position.
  • Verbally communicates with Radiologist to ensure prompt review of images immediately upon completion of examination.
  • Accountable to answer nuclear medicine departmental phone and problem solve as needed.
  • Observes radiation safety practices at all times, adheres to all clean sweep guidelines, hand hygiene, and infection control standards per policy.
  • Reports any equipment problems/malfunctions to clinical engineering or supervisor and problem solves as needed.

Common Duties

  • Maintains accountability by ensuring compliance thru timely completion of licensures, certifications, all competencies, health requirements (PPD, N95, Flu, etc.), and education requirements.
  • Maintains accountability and timekeeping expectations as outlined by MCHS Timekeeping and Attendance policy and procedures. Ensures behavior is compliant with communication standards.
  • Ensures behavior meets and/or exceeds targeted service scores as measured by the Service Index and/or the internal departmental service survey.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Degree in Nuclear Medicine Technology from accredited school.
  • One year experience as a pediatric nuclear medicine technologist preferred.
  • Basic knowledge in use of computers and printers, and/or ability to learn appropriate software applications.
  • Able to effectively collaborate with other departments.
  • Able to relate cooperatively and constructively with patients, families, and co-workers.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both verbally and writing.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Able to problem solve and adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client's needs.
  • Able to interpret, adapt, and react calmly under stressful conditions.
