This position is located in Tallahassee, FL

Position Overview and Responsibilities:

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Office of General Counsel (OGC), located in Tallahassee, Florida is seeking to fill multiple attorney positions across the following sections: Waste Management, Contracts Unit, and Water, Air and State Lands.

Waste Management Section – Attorney Position . This primarily transactional position focuses on advising DEP’s Divisions and six District Offices on matters involving one or more of the following: waste management, contamination cleanup, underground injection control, and drinking water programs. While the role is within DEP, prior experience in environmental law is not required.

Contracts Section – Attorney Position. This position involves transactional work, with responsibilities including consulting on and reviewing: Requests for exemptions from competitive procurement requirements, Grant agreements (state and federal) , Settlement agreements . Memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and memorandums of agreement (MOAs) and Interagency and data sharing agreements

Water, Air and State Lands Section – Program Attorney Position. This role advises program clients within the Division of Water Resource Management on administrative law, permitting, and regulatory compliance questions, as needed. This position will also assist various DEP programs in rulemaking and assist litigation attorneys with rule challenges and bid protests.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledgeable about computers and business software such as Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint).
  • A willingness to actively participate, communicate and collaborate with team members, provide proactive guidance, respond to client and co-worker queries, and timely and effectively resolve issues.
  • Ability to handle high volume in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to conduct legal research on issues including but not limited to administrative law and procedure, environmental law.
  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient with online research tools such as Westlaw and Lexis Nexis.
  • Positive attitude.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a member of Good Standing with the Florida Bar.

Position of Special Trust Requirement:

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference is for detail and solution-oriented individuals who possess practical critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with environmental or real estate law. Alternatively, experience contract, grant, procurement, or real estate experience.

Pay: Salary will be commensurate with years of experience since becoming a member of the Florida Bar.
