Marine Laborer/Helper - Pensacola Shipyard

JOB SUMMARY:
The General Laborer / Yard Helper performs a wide range of manual and support tasks throughout the shipyard, with a primary focus on yard operations—keeping the vessel, work areas, and yard clean, organized, and safe. The position moves, stages, and rigs material and equipment to support production, and assists shipfitters, welders, and other trades by gathering tools, pulling leads and equipment, and lending a hand with measuring, lifting, and positioning components. When assigned, the helper may place tacks on structural components that have been fit by the shipfitter and are awaiting welding. This is an entry-level, hands-on role that keeps the yard running and supports the trades wherever they are needed.
Employees are often required to perform jobs beyond the essential functions of their primary position. These may include—but are not limited to—assisting other employees in cleaning and removing debris from areas where work is performed, partnering with coworkers to complete work under tighter deadlines, and temporarily filling in for an absent employee. QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Able to perform the physical demands described above, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to work overtime, nights, or weekends as needed.
- Prior shipyard, construction, or industrial experience is a plus but not required; on-the-job training is provided.
- Must comply with all OSHA and Patti Marine safety policies and complete any required safety training, drug screening, and background checks.
- Pass a Pre-employment Drug Test
- Pass a NON-DOT Physical Agility Assessment
- Complete an OSHA Respirator Questionnaire (completed at clinic during physical)
- Participate in RANDOM quarterly drug tests
- Complete a standard pre-employment background check
MON-THUR -----7:30am - 4pm
FRIDAY 7:30am -3pm *Overtime is typically available but NOT mandatory*• Typical working hours are 40 hours per week
• Work that exceeds 40 hours is considered overtime (and paid at "time-and-a-half")
• A 10-minute paid morning break is taken at 9:30am daily
• A 30-minute unpaid lunch break is provided daily at 11:30am - 12:00pm PAY:
$15/hr. - $18/hr. (Depending on current level of experience) ESSENTIAL DUITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties are listed in order of emphasis. Yard operations are the primary focus of this position; the remaining duties support production and the trades throughout the shipyard. Yard & Vessel Operations (Primary Focus):
- Clean and maintain vessels, modules, and work areas—removing debris, slag, grindings, scrap, and standing water to keep work zones safe and ready for production.
- Sweep, shovel, and pick up the shipyard grounds, walkways, and laydown areas; empty trash and dispose of waste in the designated containers.
- Maintain good housekeeping and foreign object debris (FOD) control in and around the vessel at all times.
- Clean and organize tool rooms, storage areas, and shop spaces; return tools and equipment to their proper locations.
- Set up, coil, and stow welding leads, hoses, cords, and equipment at the end of each shift.
- Move, stage, and organize steel, structural components, consumables, and equipment to support the production schedule.
- Load and unload material from trucks, trailers, and storage areas using carts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks.
- Assist riggers and crane operators by hooking, tagging, and guiding loads, and by properly staging parts in the laydown yard.
- Transport tools, consumables, and small equipment to work areas as directed.
- Pull welding leads, equipment, and gas hoses to the work area and ensure the necessary tools are on site before work begins.
- Assist shipfitters and welders by pulling measurements, scribing reference lines (such as center and frame lines), and locating precut, labeled structural components from blueprints.
- Help lift, move, and position structural members and components for fit-up.
- Use hand tools such as hammers, wedges, clips, shims, levels, squares, and measuring tape to assist with fit-up.
- When assigned and qualified, place tacks on structural components that the shipfitter has fit to specification and that are awaiting final welding.
- Provide a second set of hands wherever production needs support—holding material, fetching consumables, and assisting the trades.
- Assist other employees in picking up and cleaning debris from areas where work has been performed.
- Partner with crews to complete work on tighter deadlines and fill in temporarily for an absent employee.
- Follow all safety rules, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and report unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, reaching, pushing/pulling, and handling throughout the shift.
- Frequent lifting and carrying of objects up to 20 lbs; occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. A two-person lift or mechanical assistance must be used for anything over 50 lbs.
- Frequent kneeling, crawling, crouching, stooping, and climbing of ladders and stairs.
- Ability to access and work in elevated areas and in confined or enclosed spaces with restricted entry, including openings ranging from 18” to 24”.
- Sustained physical activity, including repetitive motion, for the duration of the shift.
- Work is performed both outdoors in the yard and aboard vessels, in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, fumes, grinding sparks, and active welding operations.
- Standing and walking on concrete, steel, and uneven surfaces.
- Work near heavy equipment, overhead loads, and active production areas.

- When working from heights or around edges, ensure sufficient rails are in place to prevent falls; rails must surround all deck openings in accordance with OSHA regulations and company policies and procedures.
- Inspect lanyards and harnesses before each use when working in elevated or hazardous locations.
- Protect against UV radiation and ensure adequate ventilation in closed spaces to remove toxins produced by burning and welding.
- Keep work areas clean and free of trip and fire hazards at all times.
- Report all injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions to a supervisor immediately.
