Assistant Project Manager
Assistant Project Manager (APM) supports the Project Manager in planning, coordinating, and executing healthcare construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role requires experience working in active healthcare environments and knowledge of regulatory requirements, infection control protocols, and complex MEP systems typical in medical facilities.
The APM ensures projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with healthcare industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Project Coordination & Administration:
- Assist in managing all phases of healthcare construction projects, including renovations, expansions, and new builds.
- Support development and maintenance of project schedules, budgets, and cost reports.
- Coordinate subcontractors, consultants, vendors, and inspectors.
- Prepare and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, and meeting minutes.
- Maintain accurate and organized project documentation.
Healthcare-Specific Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations including FGI Guidelines, Joint Commission standards, and local/state health department requirements.
- Assist with Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA) and Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM).
- Coordinate construction activities to minimize disruption in occupied healthcare facilities.
- Support permitting and inspection processes specific to healthcare projects.
Financial & Contract Management:
- Assist in buyout and subcontractor scope review.
- Track and manage project costs, forecasts, and pay applications.
- Review subcontractor invoices and verify progress.
- Support change management process and cost analysis.
Scheduling & Quality Control:
- Monitor project schedule milestones and identify potential delays.
- Participate in site walks and quality inspections.
- Coordinate punch lists and project closeout documentation.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications and safety standards.
Communication & Stakeholder Management:
- Support client communications and progress reporting.
- Attend OAC (Owner-Architect-Contractor) meetings.
- Collaborate with hospital staff, facility managers, and clinical stakeholders.
- Maintain professional relationships with healthcare clients and regulatory agencies.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2–5+ years of construction experience, with demonstrated healthcare project exposure.
- Experience working in active/occupied healthcare environments strongly preferred.
- Understanding of healthcare construction codes, life safety requirements, and infection control practices.
- Proficiency in project management software (Procore, Bluebeam, MS Project, Primavera, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of construction documentation and processes (RFIs, submittals, change orders).
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AHCA or similar state healthcare authorities.
- LEED accreditation or sustainable healthcare construction experience.
- Basic understanding of medical gas systems, critical power, and specialized HVAC systems.
