Description
The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for Senior Lifeguards for our fantastic swim lesson and aquatic programs and the upcoming to work at the year-round Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center. We are looking for positive, patient, motivated, self-driven individuals that have a passion for working in aquatics and with children, who wish to make a difference in a child's life by teaching them lifelong water skills! Swimming experience is required. Additional program training will be provided once hired. Those that are successful in the application review will be invited to attend an interview either in person, or via ZOOM and complete an in-person skills assessment. Please note that this position requires you to work in an indoor aquatic environment subject to warm/humid temperatures.
- Applicants should be able to work at least 12-20 hours per week, year-round, including weekends and holidays, with mandatory trainings.
- Please note that shift preference is notguaranteed and is based on the program's staffing needs and can change at any time. Please keep this in mind when/if you plan to attend school or take summer college classes.

Ideal Candidate
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, this position will assist in providing aquatic recreation programs and services for a variety of age groups, abilities and interests. Assist with daily oversight of the aquatic facility and programs, including general customer service. Typical programs include lap swim, water aerobics, recreation swim, swim lessons, aquatic camps, and private rentals. This position is required to work a varied schedule, including weekends and holidays, and may include early mornings and evenings as needed for coverage.
Examples of Essential Duties:
- Assist in leading the daily work of assigned temporary personnel and volunteers.
- Supervises the swim lesson program, maintain participation records, supplies, and equipment.
- Assist with conducting aquatic training sessions, skill audits; understand legal codes and requirements related to lifeguard procedures and emergency operations.
- Enforces safety rules and regulations
- Lifeguard and teach swim lessons and other aquatic classes as needed.
- Performs general maintenance and clerical duties Monitor supplies of chemicals and equipment for the aquatic center; assist with pool maintenance and equipment as needed.
- Maintain accurate records and completes related reports
- Respond to aquatic emergencies; participate in, support, and/or coordinate response; rescue swimmers in distress and/or danger of drowning; administer first aid; evaluate medical, rescue, and training procedures and policies for quality assurance and safety functions.
- Assure effective use and cleanliness of facilities & equipment; issue and ensure the return of City equipment.
- Interact with patrons, program participants, volunteers, and other workers to stimulate interest and participation in programs; attend meetings as assigned.
- Assist with special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- City application (Only accepted via Calopps)
- At least 18 years old at the time of application submission.
- Equivalent to a high school diploma, G.E.D., or California High School Proficiency Examination
- Must successfully pass a TB test before an appointment, which is at your own cost.
- Required to submit to a City Fingerprint Background Investigation
- Complete an in-person swimming skills evaluation, to be scheduled with the Aquatic Coordinator. Including but not limited to 25-yard swim of Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke, Butterfly, a 300-yard swim (freestyle or breaststroke, demonstrating breath control), 2-minute tread without the use of hands/arms, retrieve a 10lbs object from 20 yards and return it to the side of the pool within 1 min, 40 sec
- Current Certifications in: (*Must be able to obtain within first year of position)
- American Red Cross Lifeguarding or Shallow Water Lifeguarding
- Water Safety Instructor (WSI)*
- Other desirable certifications include.
- American Red Cross Water Park
- American Red Cross Emergency Oxygen
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
- CPO or AFO
- Knowledge of recreational computer system desirable
- Must be Available for a variety of shifts and times to meet program needs including weekends.

Benefits
This is a non-benefited, temporary position. Temporary employees will only work up to 1,000 hours per year.
PART-TIME BENEFITS:
- Sick Leave: After 90 days from an employee’s hire date, the employee is entitled to 5 days (40 hours) sick leave per fiscal year. Sick hours do not roll over to the next year and therefore must be utilized or forfeited annually.
RETIREMENT:
- Temporary employees will be required to contribute to a Nationwide Deferred Compensation Plan.
PART-TIME EMPLOYEE STATUS:
- Employment may be terminated with or without cause or notice, at any time, at the will of the City of Newark, in its sole discretion.
