General Summary: Responsible for assisting with the administration of medications as ordered by the attending physician under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures, and practices of the facility, and requirements of this state.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Safely prepares, administers, and charts oral, topical, and rectal medications as ordered by the attending physician and in accordance with facility policy and regulations.
2. Assists with the administration of medications under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse.
3. Verify the identity of the resident before administering the medication treatment.
4. Follow the facility’s procedures allowing residents to self-administer his or her medications.
5. Assist the Nurse in monitoring and documenting all aspects of self-administration.
6. Promptly notify the Nurse of any failure to properly take any “self-administered” medications.
7. Ensures all medications are properly labeled.
8. Follows facility policies and procedures regarding the destruction or discarding of medications.
9. Follows facility procedures governing drug receipt errors including notifying the delivery source and charge nurse.
10. Follows procedure in holding medications for residents who are transferred from the facility or when the attending physician discontinues medications.
11. Accurately measure, record, and report the vital signs of residents.
12. Checks and prepares each dose immediately preceding administration.
13. Follows administration protocol.
14. Records administration of the medication on the resident’s medication administration record. Discards medication refused or otherwise not given and records on medication administration record.
15. Reports medication errors or reactions to medications immediately to the charge nurse, who, in turn, reports to the resident’s attending physician and completes the necessary documentation.
16. Signs and has access to the controlled schedule drug cabinet.
17. Checks and prepares each dose immediately preceding administration.
18. Follows administration protocol.
19. Can be a team leader and supervise CNA staff.
20. Reports all resident changes in condition promptly to the Nurse.
21. Reports all allegations, accidents, and incidents to the Nurse.
22. Maintain infection control practices
23. Attends in-service training and education sessions, as assigned; completes Relias training on time every month.
24. Familiarity with emergency procedures and may be required to assist with evacuations.

1. Maintains safe and sanitary workstations and equipment.
2. Encourages independence, attendance at activities, restorative programs, and rehabilitation.
3. Operate as a member of a team both within the department and across departments.
4. Performs other work duties and responsibilities as assigned.
