Safety Officer
The Fleet Safety Officer is an experienced safety professional who serves as a traveling shipboard safety leader across the fleet. This role acts as the Revitalization Safety Manager for assigned revitalization projects and is responsible for delivering and maintaining high standards of safety, compliance, and training. The Fleet Safety Officer works under the direction of the Fleet Safety Manager and is fully capable of performing all duties of a Safety Officer on any assigned vessel. This position requires mobility between ships to support safety programs, risk assessments, training, and incident response.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage revitalization and dry dock safety activities, including the implementation of Revitalization and Dry Dock risk assessments.
- Support shipboard management in all safety aspects during revitalization and dry dock periods.
- Conduct pre-inspections of ship safety procedures and systems prior to revitalization or dry dock work.
- Lead marine safety training programs and support shipboard management in safety matters.
- Maintain station bills and emergency plans for the fleet; review and update for operational changes.
- Analyze and amend station bills to reflect changes in operational par levels and maintain emergency plan databases.
- Maintain knowledge of all duties of Fleet Safety Officers; act as mentor and advisor to fleet safety personnel.
- Support the Fleet Safety Manager in developing, producing, and maintaining Safety Training Programs and materials for existing and new build projects.
- Deliver transition training for newly promoted safety officers and provide ongoing safety and training programs for shipboard officers as approved.
- Develop and address skill gaps among marine officers; identify training needs to uphold crew competence in alignment with the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
- Deliver mandatory trainings such as pre-departure safety, ship safety orientation, crowd management, crisis management and human behavior, lifeboat certification, and fast rescue boat training where applicable.
- Update and deliver training on critical emergency numbers, emergency plan instruction numbers, galley fire training, and specialized training for mobile groups (dressing, entry procedures, search and rescue, etc.).
- Attend meetings, training sessions, and other activities as required by the Fleet Safety Manager.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of company/regulatory safety training, curricula, logistics, and delivery; perform Train-the-Trainer duties as needed.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of safety/compliance databases and train shipboard officers on their use.
- Maintain expertise in safety emergency procedures, equipment, and logistics; understand the shipboard emergency response organization and tactics.
- Perform other duties as required; understand that this description covers core responsibilities and that duties may evolve with fleet needs.
Education & Certifications:
- Mastery of international and national safety conventions and regulations relevant to the fleet.
- Trainer and Assessor qualifications (TTTI) STCW V6/1 or equivalent preferred.
- Company-required safety training as per Training, Licenses, & Certificates requirements for deck safety leadership.
- Strong background in accident prevention and investigation processes.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Excellent leadership, communication, and instructional abilities.
- Proficiency in Safety Management Systems, incident investigation, risk assessment, and training program development.
- Ability to manage cross-department safety initiatives and coordinate with shoreside safety teams.
- Proficiency with safety databases and training software; ability to train others to operate safety systems.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills; capable of managing multiple projects across ships.
Language Requirements:
- Excellent English reading, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare reports, present information, and communicate with crew, guests, and shoreside personnel.
- Additional languages are advantageous but not required.
Physical & Environmental Requirements:
- Regularly sit, stand, walk, and travel between ships; capable of light office work and on-deck activities.
- Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds as required by duties.
- Normal or corrected vision; good color and depth perception for safety tasks.
- Ability to participate in emergency life-saving procedures and drills; full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and coordination; may require travel and longer assignments at sea.
Working Conditions:
- Onboard assignments across multiple vessels; travel and extended deployments as needed.
- Work in varied shipboard environments, including high-stress safety scenarios and during drills.
- Flexibility to adjust to changing schedules, voyages, and project timelines.
