Construction Project Estimator
Position Overview
The Construction Estimator plays a key role in supporting sales, design, and production by delivering accurate, timely, and competitive cost estimates for residential and commercial projects. This position is responsible for detailed quantity takeoffs, subcontractor and vendor bid coordination, proposal preparation, and maintaining estimating systems that support consistency, accuracy, and profitability across all projects.
The ideal candidate brings hands-on estimating experience, strong organizational skills, and a solid understanding of construction methods, costs, and compliance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Project Bidding & Estimating
- Prepare accurate estimates for residential and commercial projects, including detailed material takeoffs and scope reviews
- Solicit, review, and manage subcontractor and vendor bids
- Deliver clear written proposals and pricing breakdowns for sales presentations
- Revise and update estimates throughout pre-sale and design phases
- Maintain historical cost data for labor, materials, and subcontractors
- Track estimate accuracy by comparing projected costs to actual project results
- Input and manage all estimating documentation in Buildertrend
Sales & Design Support
- Draft clear, compliant contracts for approved estimates
- Ensure the sales team has accurate pricing and documentation to close projects
- Provide pricing guidance and budget updates during design development
- Confirm approved designs align with estimated scope and costs
Permitting & Compliance
- Coordinate with permitting agencies to track required permits
- Ensure estimates reflect applicable codes, regulations, and permitting requirements
Subcontractor Coordination
- Schedule and conduct job walks with subcontractors as needed
- Confirm bids and contracts align with project specifications and site conditions
Risk Management & Reporting
- Identify high-risk scopes and recommend appropriate contingencies
- Monitor material lead times and availability for scheduling accuracy
- Recommend improvements to estimating systems and workflows
- Report monthly pre-construction estimating metrics (accuracy, budget variance, change orders) to the COO
Requirements
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of combined residential and commercial construction estimating experience (required)
- Proficiency with estimating and project management software
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, building codes, and cost drivers
- Proven ability to produce accurate, competitive estimates that support profitable projects
- Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate across sales, design, and subcontractor teams
