DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF WORK:

The Veterinarian provides medical and surgical care of animals that are housed in the shelter; monitors day-to-day health of animals in the shelter; and works to ensure for the health of the population through herd health protocols and proper sanitation practices. This includes triage and stabilizing ill and injured animals, diagnosing and treating a wide variety of medical conditions, anesthetizing animal s, as needed, and performing surgery.

The ideal candidate will have a commitment to animal welfare; a working knowledge of companion animal care and adoption issues; previous clinical experience, particularly in shelters or a fast-paced veterinary setting. Surgical and diagnostic skills, interest in and understanding of shelter medicine, epidemiology, and herd health; written and verbal skills; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; critical thinking and problem-solving.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

Examines and treats impounded and adopted animals
Directs separation of diseased animals for treatment or other disposition
Issues certificates containing status of health for animals adopted
Inoculates, spay or neuters adult and juvenile animals in accordance with established laws and policies
Performs emergency treatment and surgery upon injured and diseased animals
Performs and interprets laboratory test for parasitic conditions, diseases and injuries; operates X-ray equipment as necessary
Performs and directs the necessary euthanasia of impounded animals according to established laws and policies
Performs routine examinations and required State testing of all impounded large animals/livestock
Reviews and makes recommendations to the Director concerning veterinary clinic policies, procedures and activities; prepares periodic evaluation reports on veterinary services
Develops training and accompanying manuals on appropriate animal medical care for Veterinary Assistants and other personnel
Monitors and responds to impounded animals with potentially dangerous diseases that may affect animal or human population
Evaluates, examines and reviews animal cases that are subject to animal cruelty investigations
Serves as an expert court witness as necessary
Performs decapitation of dead animals that are submitted for rabies testing
Acts as liaison with veterinarians in private practice
Seeks their support and cooperation for various projects and activities
Confers and cooperates with animal humane and civic organizations in the community
Makes educational presentations to organizations concerning veterinary care
Regular, dependable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job
Provides sterilizations for pets of citizens participating in the low-income and low-cost spay/neuter programs

Knowledge of our ability to quickly lean ordinances, law enforcement and health regulations pertaining to animals and related legal procedures
Ability to capture and control vicious and dangerous animals
Ability to handle and restrain large and small animals
Knowledge of practices, policies and procedures pertaining to the operation of an Animal Services Facility or small animal shelter/kennel environment
Skill to use all animal capture equipment issued including but not limited to: Ketch-All pole, Snappy Snare and live animal traps
Ability to supervise and coordinate the activities of subordinate employees
Ability to prepare related budget and statistical reports
Ability to identify common animal diseases or disorders
Ability to assess the temperament of animals
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions
Ability to safely and humanely pick up and handle animals, alive and deceased, up to and over 100 pounds with assistance when needed
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
Outstanding project management and organizational skills
Possess oral and written communications abilities
Working knowledge in the use of MS Word, Excel and Outlook
Work is performed in an Animal Shelter. Employees may travel to different locations for meetings or other events as required
Typically work is completed during normal business hours (Monday - Friday 8am-5pm); flexibility is required to meet operational needs



QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from a college or university accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor degree
  2. Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Florida
  3. and two (2) years of experience in the practice of veterinary medicine preferred
  4. Possess and maintain a valid Florida driver license, (required for travel)
  5. Concentration/specialty in Shelter Medicine is preferred
  6. Must be able to obtain a Drug Enforcement Administration License within 60 days of hire
  7. Florida State Certification in euthanasia or must obtain within six (6) months of hire
