The opportunity:

The Senior Grants Manager is responsible for overseeing the full lifecycle of the organization’s grant portfolio, including research, proposal development, submission, reporting, and compliance. This role ensures that all grant-related activities align with organizational priorities, funding requirements, and strategic goals. The Senior Grant Manager will also serve as a key liaison between program teams, finance, and external funders.

Working with their supervisor, the Chief Financial Officer; their direct report Grants, Compliance, and Audit Manager; as well as the CEO, Chief Program Officer and members of the leadership team, the Senior Grants Manager is responsible for a portfolio of approximately $4M in funding from foundations and $2M from government agencies.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • The Grants and Government Relations Senior Manager oversees the Grants, Compliance, and Audit Manager.
  • Manage using JA’s project management tools.
  • Provide oversight and direction in accordance with the organization's policies and procedures.
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback.
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among team members that promotes creativity, diversity, problem-solving, innovative solutions, authenticity, honesty, respect, and commitment to the mission.

  • Lead employees using a performance management and development process that provides an overall context and framework to encourage employee contribution and includes goal setting, feedback, and performance development planning.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Grant Research & Strategy
    • Identify, research, and evaluate potential funding opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources.
    • Collaborate with leadership and program teams to align grant-seeking strategy with organizational goals.
    • Maintain a calendar of grant deadlines and proactively plan submissions.
    • Solicit new funders through various methods, including large/small group presentations and outreach to possible corporate partners and foundations.
  • Proposal Development & Submission
    • Lead the drafting, editing, and submission of grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting materials.
    • Ensure proposals meet funder guidelines, deadlines, and organizational standards.
    • Collaborate with applicable staff to gather programmatic data, outcomes, and narratives.
  • Grant Management & Compliance
    • In conjunction with direct report, monitor active grants to ensure compliance with funder requirements.
    • In conjunction with direct report, prepare and submit accurate and timely grant reports, budgets, and financial documentation.
    • Maintain a comprehensive record of grant agreements, correspondence, and deliverables.
  • Relationship Management
    • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with funders and partners through a variety of communication methods including planned site visits.
    • Serve as the primary contact for funder inquiries and site visits.
    • Work with the Director of Philanthropy to develop and implement recognition programs that are of interest and value to supporting partners.
    • Support stewardship efforts, including acknowledgment letters and impact reporting.

  • Department Management
    • Optimize grant writing and progress tracking through workflow processes and procedures to ensure accurate and efficient collection and reporting of grant data.
    • Serve as a leader in the organization, participating in strategic planning, budgeting, and other leadership initiatives.
    • Maintain departmental budget.
  • Data & Impact Reporting
    • Track grant outcomes, key performance indicators, and program metrics.
    • Provide actionable insights to leadership to inform program planning and funding strategies

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Key experience and expertise you would bring to the role would include:

  • Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree preferred (e.g., MPA, MBA, Nonprofit Management).
  • 5+ years of experience in grant writing and management.
  • Proven success securing and managing large grants from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
  • Being an effective communicator – both written and verbal, as well as in public speaking and presentation.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives.
  • Excellent attention to detail, especially in data management.
  • Analytical skills to interpret data and translate into compelling narratives.
  • Ability to establish harmonious and collaborative working relationships across teams and senior leadership.
  • Strategic thinking and initiative.
  • Proficiency with grant management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, walking, and occasionally required to reach, bend, lift, or climb.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
