Job Description

The Forklift & Material Handling Equipment Technician inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a wide range of powered industrial equipment, including stand-up and sit-down forklifts, electric and propane-powered forklifts, ride-on pallet jacks, and manual pallet jacks. This role ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with OSHA and internal standards. The technician performs preventative maintenance, diagnoses mechanical and electrical issues, and completes timely repairs to minimize downtime and maximize equipment reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair stand-up forklifts, sit-down forklifts, electric forklifts, propane-powered forklifts, ride-on electric pallet jacks, and manual pallet jacks.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance according to manufacturer specifications to extend equipment life and prevent unexpected failures.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and propulsion system issues on a variety of material handling equipment.
  • Replace and repair components such as motors, batteries, chargers, controllers, brakes, steering systems, tires, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, hoses, chains, and lift assemblies.
  • Service and maintain propane fuel systems and electric battery charging systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Conduct thorough equipment safety inspections and operational testing following repairs to verify proper performance and compliance with safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate service records, maintenance logs, and repair documentation for all equipment serviced.
  • Use diagnostic tools and software to identify equipment malfunctions and determine appropriate repair strategies.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, service manuals, and technical documentation to support accurate troubleshooting and repair.
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems, control modules, battery systems, drive motors, sensors, and hydraulic components to quickly resolve issues.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform emergency repairs to reduce operational downtime and maintain productivity.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience maintaining and repairing forklifts, pallet jacks, or other material handling equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with forklift repair and pallet jack maintenance.
  • Ability to work on gas and propane-powered forklifts and other powered industrial trucks.
  • Strong mechanical skills, including the ability to repair and replace major mechanical components.
  • Strong electrical skills, including troubleshooting of wiring, control modules, and battery systems.
  • Strong hydraulic troubleshooting and repair skills for pumps, hoses, cylinders, and related components.
  • Proven experience performing forklift maintenance and material handling equipment maintenance in a shop or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting ability using diagnostic tools, software, and technical documentation.
  • Experience responding to and resolving equipment breakdowns under time-sensitive conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with propane-powered industrial equipment and fuel systems.
  • Familiarity with major forklift brands such as Raymond, Crown, Toyota, Hyster, Yale, or similar equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, service manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to equipment and workplace safety.
  • Solid documentation skills for maintaining accurate service records and maintenance logs.
  • Willingness to participate in in-house training and pursue additional certifications supported by the company.

Work Environment

You work in an open bay shop equipped with numerous fans and swamp coolers to improve air circulation and comfort. The schedule follows a first-shift pattern, typically 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with an average of about 45 hours per week. Uniforms are provided and laundered weekly, and a changing room is available on site, supporting a practical and professional work attire environment. The shop setting focuses on hands-on mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic work on material handling equipment, using diagnostic tools, service manuals, and standard technician equipment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $31.00/hr.
