The Behavioral Health Clinician provides behavioral health assessments, counseling, and intervention services to support the psychological, emotional, and social well‑being of personnel and their families. The BHC delivers evidence‑based care across individual, family, and group settings and collaborates closely with interdisciplinary teams to support mission readiness and resilience. This role includes diagnostic assessment, brief interventions, case management, consultation, and participation in research and program development activities.
HOW A BEHAVORIAL HEALTH CLINICIAN WILL MAKE AN IMPACT:
- Attend and participate in meetings during normal duty hours, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities such as, but not limited to the following: quality improvement meetings, professional staff meetings, commander's staff meetings, and other meetings required by applicable regulations or as directed by the unit Commander of his/her designee.
- Conduct USSOCOM/POTFF approved applied research and clinical investigations in clinical, behavioral health, and/or organizational levels. • Responsible for the application of professional practice procedures and techniques, including interviewing, behavioral assessment, and evidence-based therapies, in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of psychological and neuropsychological disorders using the following skills: individual, family and group psychotherapy, couples therapy, alcohol and drug treatment evaluations.
- Consult with medical personnel, legal authorities, military commanders and school districts as required.
- Participate in military specific training/activities (e.g., security clearances, use of the DoW or service specific clinical practice guidelines, pre-post deployment screening, PTSD, and combat stress) and others as directed by the unit Commander or his/her designee.
- Contact referred clients to assess treatment adherence.
- Use validated symptom inventories to assess current symptom severity.
- Assess barriers to treatment adherence and help client problem-solve solutions to barriers.
- Provide clients with education regarding their mental health condition and treatment regimen.
- Maintain client information in a client registry.
- Routinely staffs difficult cases with the referring provider, behavioral health consultant and/or psychiatry consultant.
- Performs case management functions.
- May include clinical supervision of unlicensed providers or trainees.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED:
You must have one of the following degrees:
- Master’s or doctoral degree in social work from a fully accredited graduate school by the Counsil on Social Work Education (CSWE) and licensed at an independent level in social work (LCSW or equivalent).
- Master’s or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE), or a qualifying graduate degree in an allied mental health field from a regionally accredited education institution in conjunction with a program of marriage and family therapy study that is equivalent to the COAMFTE standards as defined by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Must possess a clinical membership credential issued by the AAMFT.
- Master’s degree from a fully accredited graduate school and licensed at an independent level in professional counseling and pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) or an examination determined by the Director, Defense Health Agency or designee as equal in scope, intent, and content to the NCMHCE.
- A minimum of two (2) years peer-reviewable clinical work experience in a mental health setting. Experience working in a government setting such as DoW or Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) MTF is preferable.
- Be able to meet credentialing and privileging standards pursuant to 5a of the Defense Health Agency-Procedures Manual 6025.13, “Clinical Quality Management in the Military Health System, Volume 4: Credentialing and Privileging,” August 29, 2019.
- Must have experience in brief behavioral interventions.
