A family living in Miami, Florida is seeking a female native Mandarin speaker to support Mandarin development for native English-speaking 8yo and 5yo female students. The students have been in a Mandarin-English school since preschool and have some fluency. Other than school, the students have no exposure to Mandarin. The family has friends who may also be interested in Mandarin for their children, so for the right person, this could be a meaningful and lucrative professional opportunity. This role can be custom-defined to suit the candidate. What matters in this role is that the candidate: is a native Mandarin speaker with the highest level of language skill Is fluent enough in English to communicate effectively with the family has a masters in education from a highly respected university is an effective bilingual teacher who uses best practices in immersive second-language support can fully commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week (mostly late, afternoons, evenings and weekends) has a warm, engaging, and nurturing manner Is excited to live in Miami Is open to working with up to 5 children at a time (with assistance) Optional: Has proficiency in playing musical instruments Can legally work in the U.S. (although we will consider sponsorship in some cases) This Mandarin teacher will be responsible for: conducting a pre-experience intake with the students to assess current fluency and skill proposing a set of goals, timeline and approaches for family approval preparing weekly instructional plans based on priorities the parents have identified getting family approval for plans in advance securing all needed materials (family will cover all costs) ensuring the students experience a minimum of 15 hours of Mandarin immersion each week advising the family on ways they can support Mandarin in the home innovating in the curriculum, such as by finding ways for the student to interact with native peer Mandarin speakers, implementing creative activities that invite full engagement (eg theater, presentations etc) or incorporating Mandarin into hands-on activities like cooking assessing the student's language development and milestones and providing monthly progress reports for the family Salary $55,000 for 20 hours per week + room and board or $65,000 for 20 hours per week (no room or board) 4 weeks paid time off 4 weeks unpaid time off (optional) room and board is optional, not required Schedule 4pm-8pm on school days (180 days per year, Sept - June) 3-5 hours per weekend (days and times to be decided weekly) The Environment The home is located in Key Biscayne, a beautiful island community in Miami. A family of 5, 3 daughters Penelope (8) Sienna (5), and Victoria (2), and our two small dogs Bubba and Mulan. Aron the dad is from Quito Ecuador, and is a technology entrepreneur. Jessica, the mom, is from Exeter, New Hampshire, USA, and is a book writer. We have lived in Boston, NYC, Hong Kong, and now recently in Miami. There are two other people daily in the house who are babysitters that do not live-in: Mayra who has been with us since our first daughter was born, and moved from NYC to Miami with us in 2020. As well as Juanita who joined the family in 2020, we consider them both family. Extended Opportunity Our kids go to a wonderful school 20 minutes away from the house. There is a Mandarin immersion program in the school that we would like to supplement with someone like you. There are several opportunities with other families around the school to do another part time engagement, as well as inside the school. Termination This relationship can be terminated by the teacher or the family at any time, with no less than 2 weeks' notice. In the case of termination, the teacher will be paid for all time worked (pro-rated) and expenses (eg travel) within reason (and specified in the work contract) as long as 2 weeks of notice is given.
