This position is located in Tallahassee, FL.
Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This OPS Environmental Specialist I position is part of the Florida Geological Survey’s (FGS) Geologic Sample Acquisition and Management section. The successful candidate will act as an assistant to the Curator in the FGS Geological Sample Collections Facility (repository). Duties include the physical preparation of geologic samples for archival storage, updating the FGS GEODES database and Microsoft Excel tracking files, assisting with the maintenance of the facility and the preservation of samples stored in the facility, and participation in Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) processes for physical samples and electronic records. These duties involve occasional heavy lifting, frequent work in a warehouse with limited climate control, use of power tools, and use of computers in both office conditions and field conditions.
- Receiving samples, including team lifting of core boxes weighing up to 150 pounds and use of a forklift.
- Processing of well cuttings and core samples, including use of masonry and rock saws.
- Maintenance of facility, including sweeping, dusting, removal of cobwebs and other tasks as assigned.
- Delivering and retrieving samples for FGS scientific staff and visiting researchers.
- Assists in the maintenance of Collections related databases and electronic documents.
- Responsible for correct submittal within established deadlines of required DEP paperwork (time sheets, vehicle logs, travel authorizations & reimbursements, etc.) in hard copy or electronic version.
- Other duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Skilled in organizing work details and prioritizing workload.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain a valid driver license.
- Ability to lift and handle boxes and other containers of up to 75 pounds in tight spaces and while using a step stool, ladder, or mobile stairs.
- Ability to operate (or learn to operate) a forklift.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Highschool diploma or equivalent.
Position Requirements:
- Valid Driver’s License.
Position of Special Trust Requirement: This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Skilled in use of stationery and handheld power tools.
- Experience with laboratory procedures and QA/QC.
- Skilled in the use of photographic software / digital photography.
Pay:
$18.00 per hour – Minimum 20 hours per week up to 28 hours per week.
