ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class.   • Keeps the mission, vision, and values of the SLCSO at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships; interacts with others in ways that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives; maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
  • Analyzes latent prints for friction ridge detail and clarity using established scientific methods.
  • Documents all phases of the analysis process and prepares detailed written reports of findings and conclusions.
  • Compares latent prints against known exemplars to establish identifications or exclusions using the ACE-V (Analysis, Comparison, Evaluation, and Verification) methodology.
  • Prepares, enters, and compares latent fingerprints using Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS).
  • Reviews, verifies, and maintains candidate lists generated through AFIS searches.
  • Examines physical evidence for the presence of latent prints and assists in processing evidence for print development.
  • Photographs latent prints and prepares exhibits for case reports, briefings, or courtroom presentations.
  • Safeguards physical and digital evidence, ensuring proper documentation and maintaining an unbroken chain of custody.
  • Operates fingerprint systems, photographic equipment, and forensic software, ensuring data accuracy and system integrity.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable safety standards, laboratory procedures, and agency policies.
  • Communicates effectively with investigators, attorneys, and other law enforcement personnel regarding findings and case progress.
  • Testifies in court as an expert witness on fingerprint analysis, methods, and conclusions.
  • Maintains proficiency with relevant technologies and techniques, including Adobe Photoshop and digital imaging software.
  • Demonstrates consistent attention to detail and adherence to scientific methodology.
  • Must possess good visual acuity with or without corrective lenses; candidates may be required to pass a visual acuity test regardless of experience.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Prompt and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Subject to random drug testing.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Must pass a comprehensive background and character investigation, medical examination, drug screening, and polygraph examination; fingerprinting will be required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience operating standard office and laboratory equipment (e.g., computers, scanners, digital cameras, multi-line phones).
  • Prior experience in fingerprint examination or related forensic work preferred.
  • If applicant has prior military service, an honorable discharge is required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Possession of a valid State ID or Florida driver's license and maintenance of a clean driving record are required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
  • Principles, methods, and scientific practices of latent fingerprint identification and classification.
  • Friction ridge examination using the ACE-V methodology.
  • Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) and related database operations.
  • Courtroom procedures as they relate to expert testimony and presentation of evidence.
  • Proper evidence handling, documentation, and preservation techniques.
  • Applicable laws, professional standards, and best practices governing forensic science and evidence management.
Skilled in:
  • Scientific observation, analysis, and documentation of latent print evidence.
  • Preparation of clear, concise, and legally defensible technical reports.
  • Operation of digital imaging and fingerprint processing systems.
  • Organization, recordkeeping, and maintenance of detailed documentation.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Photoshop.
Ability to:
  • Accurately analyze, compare, and evaluate latent fingerprints using established scientific methodology.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical precision.
  • Testify credibly and professionally as an expert witness in court proceedings.
  • Follow established policies, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of casework and evidence.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, and criminal justice partners.
  • Exhibit initiative, self-management, and accountability in performing assigned duties.
  • Work effectively under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Safely handle chemicals and operate forensic laboratory equipment to obtain latent print evidence.
  • Complete required fingerprint training programs: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Fingerprint Courses within two (2) years (dependent upon course availability).
  • Successfully complete a one-year in-house latent print training program consisting of written and practical examinations.
  • Obtain certification as a Latent Print Examiner through the International Association for Identification (IAI) when eligible.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires light physical effort in mostly sedentary to light tasks, which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 10 pounds. Extended periods of sitting, standing, or microscope use are required. Manual dexterity, close visual acuity, and fine motor coordination are essential for handling evidence and performing detailed analyses.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is primarily performed in a forensic laboratory setting with controlled environmental conditions. Tasks may involve occasional exposure to chemicals and biological materials; proper safety precautions and personal protective equipment are required.
