Position Overview and Responsibilities:

This Environmental Specialist II position performs intermediate professional work under the direction of the Environmental Administrator for the Division of Waste Management’s Solid Waste Section located in Tallahassee, Florida. This ideal candidate will possess discipline specific knowledge, leadership and technical skills to promote the sustainability, implementation and efficiency of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations related to grease waste and solid waste management.

  • Assists in the development and management of the Division of Waste Management’s statewide environmental waste permitting and compliance assistance programs.
  • Promotes department efforts encouraging permitting and compliance by regulated entities with grease and solid waste regulations.
  • Provides technical support to District grease and solid waste programs, implementing training programs and outreach material supporting the permitting and compliance assistance programs.
  • Assists in reviewing and maintaining permit documents, management reports and compliance reviews as directed to ensure districts meet annual level of service commitments and priorities.
  • Provides support for district permitting compliance assistance and outreach efforts.
  • Provides technical assistance to regulated industries, districts, local governments, and others on grease and solid waste management regulatory requirements.
  • Track and analyze compliance and enforcement activities.
  • Other duties may include gathering and management of data, preparing information for reports or presentations, or other grease and solid waste related tasks.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of state and federal waste regulations.
  • Demonstrated skill using spreadsheets for data analysis.
  • Skill in using Microsoft applications, Adobe suites, and database management tools.
  • Ability in effective oral and written communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to provide guidance to district staff with primary program area on moderately to complex projects or policies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least four (4) years of verifiable related experience in engineering, environmental science or one of the natural sciences . Post-secondary degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering, environmental science or one of the natural sciences may be used as an alternative for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis. A credential evaluation report from an approved agency must be submitted along with all foreign degrees.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Travel is required.

Position of Special Trust Requirement:

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of regulatory inspection/compliance/permitting or other related experience.
  • Knowledge of state and federal waste regulations.
