Your Specific Responsibilities:

The OPS Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Specialist is responsible for working in the Clinical Health Services Division. The incumbent will work under the Medical Services program, as well as various programmatic areas when needed within the scope of Agency protocols, State and Federal Guidelines. The medical competence, medical judgment and general practice of medicine will be evaluated through peer review. Monitoring and oversight will include, but is not limited to, an established quality improvement process with ongoing chart review. The APRN’s immediate supervisor is functionally responsible for evaluation of all standards and expectations and will facilitate access to medical consultations as needed.

Please note: This position is classified as PRN. As such, work hours are not guaranteed and are provided based on program and staffing needs. Hours are generally available only during the school calendar and school operating hours; no hours are available during school breaks, holidays, or any period when school is not in session.

OPS Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Specialist:

  • Provides comprehensive health care to clients attending school-based health clinics as needed, with Northeast High School Clinic being the home office.

  • Evaluates and performs complete physical examinations.

  • Analyzes and interprets patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, and/or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.

  • Diagnoses and treats acute health care problems such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.

  • Orders, conducts, interprets, and/or evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess patient's condition.

  • Orders, reviews and interprets laboratory tests to identify and assess patient's condition.

  • Prescribes and administers medications based on patient characteristics, efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.

  • Makes medical diagnosis and prescribes treatment within scope of service.

  • Develops treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.

  • Makes appropriate follow ups and referrals.

  • Educates patients about self-management of acute and chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances.

  • Conducts patient intake, vitals, and history when nurse is absent.

  • Administers medications and monitors special diet carb counting when nurse is absent.

  • Responds to medical emergencies on school grounds. Communicate with school staff and emergency responders regarding patient needs and follow up.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of nursing principals, practices, and techniques.

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.

  • Ability to administer prescribed medications.

  • Ability to perform complete physical appraisals of patients.

  • Ability to identify and evaluate illnesses.

  • Ability to initiate laboratory results and evaluate the results.

  • Ability to manage the care of patients

  • Ability to work with patients having a variety of physical problems

  • Ability to compile and evaluate medical histories and other clinical and laboratory data.

  • Ability to plan, coordinate and organize work assignments.

  • Ability to communicate effectively

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others

Qualifications:

Minimum

  • Clear and active license in the state of Florida to practice as an ARNP per Chapter 464, Part I of the Florida Statutes, titled the Nurse Practice Act

  • Current active Florida Nursing License or a multistate license from another compact state

  • Extensive computer skills including the use of an electronic health record (EHR)

  • Willingness to travel and cover multiple school-based clinic sites in Pinellas County as needed for coverage

  • Willingness to work in a school based health clinic providing comprehensive care to high school students.

  • Reliable transportation

Preferred

  • Three or more years of experience in Pediatric or Family Medicine clinic setting

  • One year experience working as an APRN

Where You Will Work:

This position will be based out of Northeast High School, however will assist in covering at all 5 school based health clinics, which include Gibbs, Boca Ciega, Largo, and Pinellas Park High School Clinics, should assistance be needed.
