Ambulance Driver
Job Summary:
An employee classified as an Ambulance Driver is responsible for safely and expeditiously arriving on scene and transporting the patient to their destination. These patients are transported via a non-medical stretcher (NMS) van, wheelchair (WC) van, or a Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance. Crews are expected to exercise independent judgment, based upon training and each situation. Certified Drivers are also required to perform other appropriate duties as assigned by their supervisor.
Employees assigned to this classification may be the lead crewmember on a non-medical transport (NMT) unit.
What you will do as an Ambulance Driver:
- Respond to emergent or non-emergent medical calls on a BLS unit
- Respond to NMT runs which includes stretcher and wheelchair transports
- Arrive to the dispatched location using the most practical route
- Safely operate and maintain their assigned unit while using all safety devices and equipment to include electronics, oxygen, and applicable supplies
- Recognize life-threatening situations and react according to their scope of practice
- Perform first aid functions in emergent and non-emergent situations as necessary and according to their scope of practice
- Assist the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) as necessary and within the scope of practice when assigned to a BLS unit
- Complete and/or assist partner with paper reports, collect applicable paperwork (including CMN / PCS) and transfer as appropriate to designated internal source
- Assist in loading of patients and providing transportation to the patient’s destination
- Provide or assist in the safe transfer and/or lifting of patients
- Make up stretcher and clean the vehicle interior after each call
- Inspect and inventory vehicle daily, ensure that the vehicle is clean, fully equipped, in proper operating condition and in compliance with all state and local laws
- Report any problems to Shift Commander (SC)
- Assist in housekeeping and routine office work as required
- Perform other related duties as assigned by SC
What it takes to be successful:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 18 years of age or older
- Valid Driver’s License
- Clean driving record
- Regular, reliable attendance
- Qualified applicants must meet Florida Statutes 401.281 Driver Requirements. Century may provide the necessary training / certifications to qualify post-orientation (must be completed within 30 days of employment)
- Upon offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass background, DMV, employment verification and pre-employment testing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Valid CPR/ Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider certification*
- First aid course*
- Minimum 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)*
*Century may provide the necessary training / certifications to qualify post- orientation (must be completed within 30 days of employment).

Physical & Mental Demands:
- Must be able to perform the following tasks:
- Walk - frequently, up to 4 hours per day
- Run - infrequently, 1-2 minutes per day
- Stand - frequently, up to 2 hours per day
- Sit - frequently, up to 8 hours per day
- Kneel - frequently, 10-16 times per day
- Bend - frequently, 10-16 times per day
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, carry 250 lbs. infrequently (1-4 times per shift)
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, carry 150 lbs. frequently (6-18 times per shift)
- Must have ability to step up and/ or climb over obstacles
- Must be able to climb stairs while carrying up to 150 lbs
- Must have adequate hearing acuity to pass a hearing test given by a State of Florida driver license examiner or a licensed physician. (as delineated in Sections 322.12 and 322.221, F.S. - License Examinations)
- Must have adequate vision (with or without corrective) to pass an eyesight test given by a State of Florida driver license examiner designated by the department or by a licensed ophthalmologist, optometrist, or physician. (as delineated in Sections 322.12 and 322.221, F.S. - License Examinations)
- Must have adequate hand and finger dexterity to grip and hold both large and small items
- Must have adequate hand and arm strength to grip and lift heavy objects
- Must be able to tolerate work in an outdoor environment (heat, cold, rain, etc.)
- Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously
- Collect, interpret, and/or analyze complex data and information
- Understand and respond to a diverse population
- Utilize fine motor coordination, clear speech, and good visual acuity
