Overview
Lead survey coordination, data management, and analytical functions for the GCRF Gulf Video Survey (G-FISHER and PRDW). Serve as Survey Coordinator, Field Party Chief, or Watch Stander and provide critical analytical support for stock assessments through abundance index development and SEDAR participation.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate all aspects of G-FISHER and PRDW survey preparation, execution, and completion in support of the GCRF Branch Chief.
- Draft and review survey instructions and reports; manage approval paperwork and survey schedules.
- Coordinate logistical support for supplies, equipment, and vessel activities; manage GitHub project management tool.
- Serve as liaison between ship, laboratory, and TAS program personnel.
- Conduct at-sea data collection, environmental sampling, and data logging as Field Party Chief.
- Manage Oracle databases with OMI personnel; ensure data standardization, backups, and security.
- Serve as video annotation reviewer and subject matter expert for Gulf of America and Caribbean reef fishes.
- Assist in implementing VIAME into the QA/QC workflow.
- Integrate SEAMAP Reef Fish Video and Panama City datasets into the unified GFISHER Oracle database.
- Estimate relative abundance indices for focal GCRF species in support of SEDAR and SEAFiSh.
- Develop species distribution models using GIS and advanced statistical methods.
- Prepare manuscripts and presentations; attend professional scientific meetings.
- Provide annual support for SEFSC Ecological Status Reports.
- Participate in public outreach and education activities.
Required Qualifications
- MS Degree or higher in Marine Science or related field, OR equivalent with 5 years of relevant experience.
- Advanced computer proficiency including statistical and graphics software; publication-level writing and oral presentation skills.
- Knowledge of SEAMAP field sampling protocols for reef fish.
- Experience as lead data collector on at-sea surveys; proficiency with shipboard hydrological (SCS) and biological (SEAL) data systems.
- Proficiency in fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification; knowledge of reef taxa from the Gulf of America.
- Knowledge of procedures when encountering endangered or threatened species.
- Must meet NOAA OMAO sea-duty medical fitness requirements; current tetanus vaccine required.
