Director of Nursing
Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall clinical leadership, management, and oversight of nursing services within the home infusion pharmacy and affiliated home health agency. This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, compliant, and patient-centered care in accordance with federal, state, and accreditation standards.
The DON plays a critical role in clinical operations, staff development, regulatory compliance, and financial stewardship of clinical services.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Oversight & Patient Care
- Oversee all nursing services related to home infusion therapies (IVIG, SCIG, biologics, anti-infectives, etc.)
- Ensure safe administration of medications and adherence to clinical protocols
- Review patient plans of care and collaborate with pharmacists and physicians
- Monitor patient outcomes, adverse events, and clinical interventions
- Ensure proper documentation and clinical accuracy across all nursing activities
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise RNs, LPNs, and nursing staff
- Develop staffing models to support business growth and patient demand
- Conduct performance evaluations and ongoing competency assessments
- Provide clinical education and continuous training (IV therapy, aseptic technique, pump usage, etc.)
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and clinical excellence
- Ensure compliance with:
- State Board of Nursing
- Medicare/Medicaid (CMS) requirements
- ACHC / Joint Commission standards
- HIPAA and patient privacy regulations
- Lead preparation for surveys, audits, and accreditation visits
- Maintain policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards
- Oversee incident reporting, infection prevention, and quality programs
- Develop and implement clinical programs and workflows for infusion therapies
- Standardize nursing procedures across all service lines
- Collaborate with pharmacy operations for coordination of care
- Ensure efficient scheduling and utilization of nursing staff
- Support expansion into new service areas and therapies
- Lead and oversee the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program , including development of quality indicators and performance benchmarks
- Collect, analyze, and report clinical and operational data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement
- Develop and implement corrective action plans based on CQI findings
- Conduct routine chart audits to ensure compliance and quality of care
- Establish and maintain a comprehensive Infection Control Program , including:
- Monitoring infection rates and trends
- Ensuring adherence to aseptic technique and infusion best practices
- Staff education on infection prevention protocols
- Investigation and reporting of infection-related incidents
- Ensure compliance with CDC, CMS, and accreditation infection control standards
- Lead Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives
- Track and analyze clinical KPIs (complications, hospitalizations, outcomes)
- Implement corrective action plans when needed
- Drive continuous improvement in patient care delivery
- Lead and facilitate monthly clinical and quality meetings , including:
- CQI/QAPI review meetings
- Infection control review meetings
- Nursing staff meetings and education sessions
- Present performance metrics, trends, and improvement plans to leadership
- Ensure documentation and follow-up of action items from all meetings
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings with pharmacy, intake, and leadership
- Support communication and alignment across departments
- Demonstrate understanding of cost drivers in home infusion and home health services , including nursing labor, supplies, and visit utilization
- Collaborate with pharmacy and billing teams to align clinical services with reimbursement structures (per diem, drug reimbursement, nursing visits, and payer-specific models)
- Ensure appropriate utilization of nursing resources to maintain both clinical quality and financial efficiency
- Support documentation practices that meet billing and reimbursement requirements , including Medicare compliance
- Participate in evaluation of new therapies and programs with consideration of clinical value and financial impact
- Assist leadership in identifying opportunities to improve profitability while maintaining high standards of patient care
Education & Licensure
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Florida
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master’s preferred
- CPR/BLS certification (ACLS preferred)
- Minimum 3–5 years of nursing leadership experience
- Experience in home infusion, specialty pharmacy, or home health strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of IV therapies, biologics, and chronic disease management
- Experience with ACHC, Joint Commission, or similar accreditation processes
- Understanding of reimbursement models, cost management, and clinical resource utilization preferred
- Patient safety and clinical outcomes
- Compliance audit and survey success rate
- Infection rate trends and prevention metrics
- CQI program effectiveness and implementation of corrective actions
- Staff retention and competency completion
- On-time documentation and care plan accuracy
- Nursing cost efficiency (cost per visit, utilization, productivity)
- Alignment of clinical services with reimbursement and margin goals
