This position plays a critical hands-on role in the testing, inspection, and verification of electrical, mechanical, and auxiliary systems, ensuring compliance with design, safety, and quality standards as the vessel transitions through dockside and sea trial phases.
The Test Electrician will work closely with the shipyard’s engineering, production, and testing departments to perform system energization, troubleshooting, and documentation in accordance with project test procedures, ABS/USCG standards, and Navy testing protocols.
Key Responsibilities

Support test leads in executing dockside and integrated system tests (power generation, switchboards, HVAC, fire detection, and machinery control).
Verify wiring terminations, control circuits, and instrumentation signals prior to energization.
HM&E System Integration Support
Assist in testing mechanical and auxiliary systems including pumps, fans, motors, and hydraulic units to verify electrical operation and system interlocks.
Collaborate with engineering and production to resolve discrepancies discovered during testing or system activation.
Participate in tagout, lockout, and safety verifications prior to equipment start-up.
Troubleshooting & Repair
Identify, isolate, and correct electrical faults encountered during test events.
Document test anomalies, assist in root cause analysis, and coordinate re-test activities.
Provide feedback on installation or design issues affecting system functionality or test performance.
Documentation & Reporting
Complete test data sheets, discrepancy logs, and verification forms per project and ABS requirements.
Maintain accurate records of test results and equipment status for inclusion in the Test Completion Index.
Support configuration control and ensure all system changes are properly documented and approved.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure adherence to shipyard safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and environmental standards.
Follow all test procedure guidelines and work instructions with emphasis on safe energization practices.
Comply with ABS, USCG, and ESG electrical standards and regulatory requirements.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience as an industrial or marine electrician performing electrical testing, troubleshooting, and system verification.
Strong working knowledge of shipboard power distribution, control systems, and auxiliary machinery circuits.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and test procedures.
Experience with multimeters, megohmmeters, insulation testers, and power analyzers.
Familiarity with ABS/USCG standards and testing requirements for new shipconstruction.
Must be able to work in shipyard environments and onboard vessels during construction and testing.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) for documentation and reporting.
U.S. citizenship and eligibility for access to controlled shipyard facilities required.
Preferred Skills
Prior experience supporting Coast Guard, Navy, or commercial ship new construction or trials.
Background in machinery control systems, switchboards, or generator testing.
Experience performing or supporting dockside tests, light-off, and sea trials.
Knowledge of ABS/NAVSEA testing documentation and Test Completion Index (TCI) management.
Technical training or certification in marine electrical systems, industrial controls, or shipyard testing preferred.
Reporting Structure
Reports directly to the TMMG Test Engineer or Test & Trials Manager.
