NATIONAL HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD LABORATORY NMR/MRI DIRECTOR SEARCH
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL, MagLab), in partnership with Florida State University (FSU), invites applications and nominations for the Director of the NMR/MRI Program position. The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at FSU. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead a world-class magnetic resonance user facility and research program at the forefront of high-magnetic-field science.
Position Overview
The Director will provide visionary scientific and administrative leadership for the NMR/MRI program, overseeing both:
A national user facility serving a diverse and growing external user community
An internationally recognized research program in magnetic resonance science
The Director will articulate and execute a strategic vision that advances high-magnetic-field instrumentation and experimental capabilities, expands the user base, and integrates emerging technologies into magnetic resonance research and applications.
Facilities and Capabilities
The NHMFL NMR/MRI User Program operates a state-of-the-art suite of instruments, including:
1.5 GHz (36 T) Series-Connected Hybrid magnet for solid-state NMR
Ultra-widebore 900 MHz system for solid-state NMR and imaging
600 MHz Dynamic Nuclear Polarization systems
Multiple instruments ranging from 850 MHz, 800 MHz, 600 MHz and lower.
A defining strength of the program is its radio-frequency technology group. It comprises scientists, engineers, and technical staff who design and construct highly efficient, custom-made solid-state NMR probes and MRI coils, enabling rapid development and deployment of novel experimental capabilities.
These capabilities support cutting-edge research across physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and chemical and biochemical engineering, enabled by the MagLab's unique high-field magnet technologies.
Responsibilities
The Director will:
Lead and manage the NMR/MRI user facility, including staff and operations
Develop and sustain a high-impact, externally funded research program
Secure funding to expand instrumentation and scientific capabilities
Foster collaborations across institutions and disciplines
Enhance and support a diverse national and international user community
Drive innovation through new methodologies, instrumentation, and data-centric approaches
Qualifications
