Engine Cadet
Position Summary:
The Engine Cadet is a temporary training position focused on gaining shipboard knowledge, sea time, and practical experience. The cadet works on a structured training program aligned with the engine officer training requirements of STCW and their respective maritime administration. The primary goal is to develop the skills necessary for progression to higher engineering ranks.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Engine Cadet reports directly to the Chief Engineer Junior, who monitors and supervises training activities. All task assignments are issued by the Chief Engineer Junior or their delegates.
All assigned tasks are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean Group's The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies.
Employees may be required to perform functions across various service venues and throughout the ship.
In accordance with Royal Caribbean’s Anchored in Excellencephilosophy, each employee conducts themselves professionally and courteously at all times. This includes positive physical and verbal interactions with guests and fellow crew members, especially in guest contact and crew areas.
Responsibilities and Duties:
The Engine Cadet is responsible for ensuring timely and efficient completion of onboard training assignments, including:
- Participating in all company-required shipboard training.
- Completing the mandatory shipboard familiarization.
- Completing the engine officer familiarization form to the satisfaction of the Chief Engineer Junior.
- Completing all engine systems and policy shipboard training modules.
- Participating in shipboard drills and safety training exercises.
- Completing the company Engine Cadet training and familiarization forms.
- Participating regularly in engine room operations.
- Participating regularly in engine room maintenance activities.
- Participating regularly in safety operations and drills.
- Demonstrating required competency tasks.
- Working with engine teams on proper watchkeeping and engine management processes.
The cadet is also responsible for:
- Keeping his/her school and company training record book up to date.
- Reviewing this record weekly with the Chief Engineer Junior.
- Presenting training and onboard familiarization records to the ship’s master every 30 days.
Requirements:
Hiring Requirements:
- Basic Safety Training certificate (STCW).
- Enrolled as a student in a recognized nautical school training program.
Language Requirements:
- Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests.
- Ability to read and write English to understand procedures, give/receive instructions, and communicate effectively with guests, supervisors, and co-workers.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to stand, walk, handle equipment, reach, talk, hear, and smell.
- Must be able to occasionally, frequently, or continually lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, with the ability to adjust focus.
- Must be physically capable of participating in emergency life-saving procedures and drills, including handling lifeboats, with full use of arms, legs, and sensory functions.
