2nd Engineer
Position Overview:
Reporting directly to the Chief Engineer, the 2nd Engineer is responsible for the operation, inspection, and maintenance of the vessel's engines, machinery,and associated systems. The role includes supervising the Engine Room duringwatch, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the Chief Engineer’s representative during engine room watch, supervising the ‘on watch’ team, ensuring watches are conducted properly, and orders are followed.
- Conduct regular rounds of machinery and steering gear spaces to observe and report malfunctions or breakdowns, performing routine adjustments, as necessary.
- Operate and maintain the Main Engine, Auxiliary Engines, and associated machinery.
- Execute maintenance, operation, and repairs within the Engine Room.
- Understand the handling characteristics of the vessel, including stopping distances, and possess full knowledge of safety features and the vessel’s VMS.
- Ensure the seaworthiness of the vessel from an engine department perspective.
- Maintain adequate stock levels of spare parts and consumables, ensuring they are ordered and recorded in the onboard system to support planned and unplanned maintenance.
- Delegate tasks to Oilers and Wipers and supervise their work.
- Be familiar with the operation and location of all lifesaving, firefighting, and pollution prevention equipment.
- Keep detailed logs of all watch operations, conditions, and maintenance activities.
- Assist junior Engine Officers with familiarization of the Engine Room, Control Room, and related equipment.
- Participate in the development of onboard operational plans aligned with technical, legislative, safety, and procedural standards.
- Report completed maintenance tasks to the Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer for entry into the planned maintenance system.
- Oversee routine pumping operations and operate generators, emergency systems, purifiers, and air compressors.
- Responsible for the care and maintenance of firefighting equipment, safety gear, fire doors, and watertight doors.
- Conduct fuel and ballast operations in accordance with company procedures to prevent pollution.
- Ensure vessel stability and stress conditions remain within safety limits.
- Maintain and repair various systems including Boilers and steam plants, Oily water separators, Separators, Compressors, Evaporators and osmosis systems, Bilge and ballast systems, Thrusters and stabilizers, Steering and rudder machinery and bilge cleanliness.
- Keep the Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer fully informed of all significant issues, machinery deficiencies, and safety concerns.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable standards.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date logs (Engine Log, Oil Record Book, Waste Discharge, Oil to Sea, etc.).
- Monitor working/rest hours and overtime of subordinates to ensure 100% compliance with company policies and ILO/MLC standards.
- Lead, train, and develop subordinate personnel, providing coaching, feedback, and performance management.
- Enforce uniform and grooming standards according to company policies.
- Promote good conduct and teamwork within the Engine Department and across other departments.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
Qualifications &Training:
- Valid STCW certification.
- Valid Engineer's License (preferably as a Second or Chief Engineer).
- Extensive experience operating and maintaining marine engines and machinery.
- Full knowledge of safety features, handling characteristics, and emergency procedures.
- Familiarity with the Vessel Management System (VMS).
- Experience with marine systems such as boilers, separators, pumps, thrusters, stabilizers, and steering machinery.
Language Requirements:
- Proficiency in reading and writing in English to understand procedures and documentation.
- Ability to give and receive instructions effectively in both written and verbal forms.
- Capable of presenting information clearly and responding to questions from guests, colleagues, and supervisors.
Physical & Environmental Requirements:
- Ability to stand, walk, handle tools, reach, talk, hear, and taste or smell regularly.
- Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Visual acuity to include close, distance, colour, peripheral, and depth perception, and the ability to focus.
- Must be physically capable of participating in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills, including lowering lifeboats.
- Ability to work in various environments, including noisy engine control rooms and engine spaces.
- Flexibility to work irregular schedules and overtime as required.
