Overview
The City of South Pasadena Fire Department is currently accepting applications for Firefighter Paramedic positions. Applications are also open to Florida state-certified Firefighters actively enrolled in a Paramedic program. Candidates must complete a recent FireTEAM test and hold a valid Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT). Applicants are required to fill out a Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) to be considered and submit the department-specific Firefighter application available on the city's website under Employment.

Department Information
The South Pasadena Fire Department operates a single fire station providing Fire and EMS services to the City of South Pasadena and surrounding areas. The city covers about 0.6 square miles, serving approximately 5,200 residents, most of whom are older adults. South Pasadena is located adjacent to St. Petersburg, Gulfport, St. Pete Beach, and Treasure Island. The department recently received new emergency vehicles, including a Sutphen SP70 platform truck and a Freightliner M2 rescue, and operates from a new modern fire station equipped with advanced facilities and technology.

The department comprises 18 line personnel, including 15 firefighters who are EMTs or paramedics, and 3 Lieutenants certified as paramedics, along with three administrative staff. The line personnel work on a 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off, with mandatory recall possible in 12-hour increments for staffing needs. Given the small department size, all personnel are cross-trained to handle various firefighting functions, including apparatus operation, ensuring a high level of proficiency across all roles.

In 2023, the department responded to 3,452 emergency calls, 84% of which were EMS-related. The department is part of a county-wide central dispatch system with automatic aid agreements, ensuring a coordinated response with other Pinellas County fire agencies.

Job Requirements
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Driver's License: Must possess a valid Florida driver's license
Language: Ability to read and speak English
Vision: Must pass NFPA Medical & Fitness Exam
Certification: Florida Firefighter II certification and Paramedic certification required
Major Job Functions
General duties involve fire prevention, fire suppression, and ALS emergency medical response.
Work includes participation in training, equipment maintenance, and emergency response.
Firefighters perform duties as part of a team under the direction of a Shift Officer.
Performance Responsibilities
Report on duty by 0800 hours and follow assigned shift duties
Respond to emergency calls as assigned, including fire and medical incidents
Perform all tasks in alignment with professional standards, including NFPA and Pinellas County guidelines
Participate in scheduled training, wellness, and fitness programs to maintain necessary skills
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Familiarity with city streets and geography
Strong paramedic and firefighting skills
Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively in emergency situations
Maintain effective working relationships with team members and the public
Proficiency with basic computer applications, Microsoft Office, and emergency vehicle operation

Prior felony conviction or nolo contendere plea
Suspended or revoked driver's license, current or past
Dismissal from prior firefighter employment for reasons other than staff reduction
